Nafisa Insan is currently a second-year PhD student in Population Health Sciences at Newcastle University. Her project is a mixed-methods study that explores Antenatal Depression in rural Bangladesh. Specifically investigating the social determinants associated with antenatal depression and the perspectives that pregnant women and healthcare providers have around mental health. The research aims to improve maternal health in rural areas of Bangladesh and other LMICs reducing socio-economic and gender inequalities between and within countries. Aside from this, She has also started an insta PhD blog and a website - Nafisa’s Notes where she likes to share her PhD journey with some tips and advice for people thinking about doing a PhD and those just starting.

December 08, 2020 How do we target cancer in a hypoxia state with Hasan Al-Habib
Hey everyone welcome to another episode of the Festa show. Today on the podcast I had Hasan who is a Ph.D. student in Oncology at Cambridge University. His project is investigating the role of a protein called CHCHD4 in regulating mitochondrial function and hypoxia signaling in vivo using zebrafish, as well as in vitro, using tumor cell systems. On the podcast, we spoke about how we both met working on COVID-19 together in the largest testing lab in the UK and how it motivated us with our Ph.D. work and an experience we are both grateful to be a part of and help. We spoke about Hasan's research at Cambridge and also his comedy.

December 06, 2020 Virology and global maternal health with Tafhima Haider
Tafhima Haider is a molecular biologist completing the final year of her PhD at UCL. Her research focusses on gaining better understanding of the cell intrinsic innate immune system, using HIV-1 and HIV-2 viruses as a tool. Her work involves gaining mechanistic insight into how the cell intrinsic innate immune system restricts HIV-1 and HIV-2 entry into target cells. She is investigating the importance of Lentiviral Envelope cytoplasmic tails in modulating viral sensitivity to this immune response. Aside from this, Tafhima is passionate about women’s health, particularly global maternal health. She volunteers at an NGO as a global maternal health researcher and is involved in an implementation research project which aims to improve maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as empowering women in rural Bangladesh.
