Jonny started posting videos of his bass singing on TikTok last year, and rose to global fame a few months ago as the baritone part in the viral Wellerman sea shanty video - gaining a record deal and a whopping 200k followers in the process!

We spoke about his 5 top tips for achieving virality on TikTok, whether the Wellerman video signals a renaissance for folk music and how having a ginger beard can help you get noticed online...

In this week’s episode, Jonny speaks to jazz trombonist and arranger Callum Au. 

Since graduating from Oxford Callum has joined the world-famous Ronnies Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, arranged over 100 charts for big bands including music for Quincy Jones, Jamie Callum and the recent Cats movie. 

Callum explains how he achieved the remarkable feat of releasing two big band albums over lockdown. The first “Songs and Stories” with a 70-piece orchestra (!) and the second “On Stage!” with an accompanying big band education resource the Ultimate Big Band Toolkit.

He goes on to explain why being an arranger is like solving puzzles and how it's an underrated skill among musicians.  

An essential listen for anyone interested in jazz education or the process of album recording!

In this episode, Jonny meets South African pianist, vocal coach and researcher Dr Nico de Villiers to learn about his lockdown podcast project, “What Would Mozart Do”. 

Nico explains how at the start of the pandemic, he was unable to answer the questions his students at Guildhall were asking him about the value of music education. To find the answer, he started the podcast which focuses on people who’ve trained in music but moved to other career paths.   

We discuss how conservatoires routinely fail to prepare musicians for life outside the concert hall.  Nico’s top tip? Check in regularly - if your current music career isn’t giving you what you first expected, change things up - and accept that change can be positive!

Jonny interviews Maurice Condie, the founding director of Phoenix Folk, a Newcastle-based folk collective who've launched one of the largest online folk sessions in the UK.

Maurice tells the incredible story of how a small local folk session turned into a tri-weekly international session including musicians from across the globe. In fact, it's been so successful that Phoenix Folk have made as much money from their music-making this year as they did pre-pandemic!

Maurice has also cracked the conundrum of how to perform simultaneously with someone over Zoom (with minimal latency) - important listening for any musicians doing virtual gigs!
