  • Stop Starting Over: A Framework for Rebuilding Your Life

What if you don't need to start over—you need to restore?

In Episode 2 of The Restoration Journey, Tonya Carruthers moves from sharing her story to giving you something practical you can use in your own life: the RESTORE Framework.

Tonya believes restoration requires both faith and intentional action. You can trust God and still have decisions to make. You can pray and still need boundaries. You can forgive and still decide that something or someone cannot return to your life.

Rather than immediately asking, “What do I do next?”, Tonya challenges us to ask a more important question:

“What needs restoration before I build what’s next?”

Through the seven stages of the RESTORE Framework, Tonya walks listeners through a practical process for navigating disruption, healing, and rebuilding with wisdom.

    The RESTORE Framework

    R — Recognize

Get honest about where you are. What is working? What's hurting? What's depleting you? Restoration begins with acknowledging what is actually broken.

    E — Examine

Get curious instead of critical. Look at the patterns, choices, lessons, and circumstances that contributed to where you are—and identify what you need to learn before moving forward.

    S — Surrender

Release what you cannot carry into your next season, including control, bitterness, expectations, timelines, and the need to understand everything.

T — Tend to What Remains

Instead of becoming consumed by what you've lost, pay attention to what survived. Your faith, relationships, wisdom, skills, purpose, creativity, and story may be more valuable than you realize.

    O — Obey

Focus on the next faithful step—not the entire plan. Sometimes restoration becomes practical through a phone call, an apology, a boundary, counseling, rest, an application, or simply starting.

    R — Rebuild

Once the foundation has been addressed, begin building again—but this time from wisdom. Ask what deserves to come with you, what needs to change, and what boundaries and rhythms will sustain your new life.

    E — Expand

Restoration isn't meant to stop with you. Your healing, story, leadership, business, testimony, and experience can create space for someone else's restoration.

Tonya also shares personal lessons from her own recovery and transition out of corporate America, including what she learned about control, trust, surrender, relationships, and recognizing what remained after a life-altering season.

At the heart of this episode is a powerful reminder:

New doesn't automatically mean healthy. Busy doesn't mean healed. Successful doesn't mean whole.

Before you rush toward your next opportunity or try to build a new version of your life, take the time to restore what needs healing.

    Your Restoration Questions

Which stage of the RESTORE Framework describes where you are right now?

Recognize. Examine. Surrender. Tend. Obey. Rebuild. Expand.

    Then ask:

What is one action you can take this week to honor that stage?

You don't have to fix your entire life this week. Just take the next faithful step.

A Message to Carry With You

Restoration isn't about going back to who you were. It's about becoming who God created you to be.

  • When Life Changes: Beginning the Restoration Journey

Welcome to the very first episode of The Restoration Journey, where faith meets healing and brokenness becomes the beginning of transformation.

In this opening episode, Tonya Carruthers shares the personal experiences that led her to create this podcast and why the word restoration became the foundation for this new journey.

Tonya opens up about the seasons when life didn't look anything like she expected. From career changes and personal losses to a life-threatening medical crisis in 2022 that changed the way she viewed her time, purpose, identity, and relationship with God.

As a longtime senior HR executive and leader, Tonya spent much of her life understanding success through achievement, responsibility, titles, and productivity. But she eventually had to confront a deeper question:

Who are you when the title disappears?

Through her own journey, Tonya discovered that restoration doesn't necessarily mean getting back what was lost. Sometimes, God isn't asking us to return to the person, career, relationship, identity, or life we once had. Sometimes He's inviting us to become someone new.

In this episode, Tonya explores the difference between resilience and restoration. Resilience says, I survived it. Restoration asks, Who am I because I survived it?

She also talks about the often-overlooked middle of the restoration process: the grief, waiting, rebuilding, surrender, obedience, and uncertainty that happen before we can see the finished testimony.

Most importantly, Tonya invites listeners to consider what God might be asking them to release so He can build something new.

In This Episode, Tonya Talks About:

    00:00 Welcome to the Show

    01:13 Why Restoration Matters

02:17 Who I Am Beyond Titles

03:53 The Medical Crisis That Changed Me

05:13 The Messy Middle of Healing

    06:49 Restoration Is Becoming

07:41 A New Life and Purpose

    08:32 Resilience vs Restoration

    09:39 Rebuilding Like a Leader

    10:42 Your First Restoration Question

    11:55 Closing and Next Steps

    Your Restoration Question

What are you trying to get back that God may be asking you to release?

It could be a position, relationship, identity, expectation, or even a former version of yourself.

Take some time to write it down, sit with it, and bring it to God.

Because sometimes the beginning of restoration is accepting that we're not going backward—we're going forward differently.

A Message to Carry With You

Restoration isn't about going back to who you were. It's about becoming who God created you to be.
