So, what's the big deal about who the "restrainer" of 2 Thes. 2 is? The truth is, many people know about the restrainer, but probably even more do not know or even care. Whether you know about the restrainer debate or not, most have been impacted by the belief that we, the church, are not going to be here when the antichrist comes anyway. The fact is, what one believes about the restrainer will make a big difference to a great many people. For almost 200 years, since John Nelson Darby brought to America what we call today "dispensationalism," which teaches the doctrine of the removal of the Holy Spirit as the "restrainer of sin," has been one of the foundational concepts of the pre-trib rapture position.
Though it is not the only support for pretrib, it is one of the pillars that supports this expansive doctrine. How one answers the restrainer question sets the stage for the debate of whether the church will still be on earth during the reign of the antichrist or not. 2 Thes. 2 gives the sequence of events detailing "the coming of our Lord" and our gathering together to him" (2 Thes 2:1) Consequently, if you accept that the church is removed with the Holy Spirit before the antichrist is revealed, that also has a direct impact on whether the church is still on earth in the Book of Revelation, after chap 3. However, IF PRETRIB IS CORRECT, GREAT! But WHAT IF IT IS INCORRECT? Uncovering the restrainer fallacy could help prevent millions of Christians from compromising who believed incorrectly that the church would be gone before the Antichrist was revealed.
