Do you say yes when you really want to say no? Are you fearful of revealing parts of yourself might cause a negative reaction?

For more than 25 years, I’ve been on a mission to dig deep and uncover who I am as a man. And through my journey, I have found out a few things about myself that I didn’t particularly like and things that I did like. You see while I’ve read 1000s of pages, spent 1000s of dollars at numerous workshops while becoming accredited in a few things. Nothing really changed until I almost lost everything for a second time.

What changed you ask? Well, I started to take responsibility for three things. First, for where I am in life. Second, for who I am, warts and all. And third, for what I aspire to become. From that point on, my mission is to mentor other men to do what I did and do because the journey is far more enjoyable when you bring others along.

So today, we are going to talk about killing that one part of every man and that is being the nice guy.

I've always wanted to be a chef. From the earliest days, I can remember watching TV shows like The Galloping Gourment I knew this was my calling. Being a chef is a labour of love. When all of your friends are partying you are working and once in a while, you're serving them. Joining the regional Olympic team was never on my bucket list until I met my mentor, Raymond Czyaka. 

In this episode, I about my time as a chef and Olympic culinarian. How the experience shaped me for decades to come.

How much are we taking life for granted? A little maybe a lot? I suspect we probably don’t think about this too much. Why would we? Life seems to be going great and then life decides to rock your world. We lose our job, get divorced, or are given a life-threatening diagnosis. Then what?

Well, they say it’s time like these that character is made or should I say revealed? And today’s guest oozes character as he shared his encounter when his foundation was shaken to its core.

Internationally known singer, writer, and dulcimer player Kevin Roth have over fifty recordings, won numerous awards, sang the theme to the hit PBS TV show Shining Time Station, and has been recognised by major companies such as Time Warner, Parents Magazine, Sony Music among others for his unique talent.  In 2016 he was diagnosed with stage three melanoma and given only two-three years to live. Kevin had a choice. Either get busy living or get busy dying.

He beat the odds, changed his diet, and outlook, and went from 'surviving' to thriving, moving from Kansas to beautiful San Diego, CA, where he created a life worth living on his terms.

The other day as I was working on creating the upcoming month’s lesson and virtue plans with exercises, I found myself going down a rabbit hole. Mindlessly scanning websites, checking email and yes even playing a card game for a bit. Then it struck me, just how easy it is for me to get distracted and concentrate on things that are not providing value and just how challenging it is to stay on point with the task at hand. Then I started to wonder if I am the only one that deals with this kind of thing? The answer is probably not. How do I know that? I have yet to have someone tell me that if they could concentrate just a little bit more or stay focused just a little longer, they would get so much more accomplished. So, how much better could our lives be if we developed the skill to concentrate for longer periods of time? I think it would radically change our lives. When I think back to my childhood and watched how my parents communicated, I can see patterns in their communication style. When there were serious things to discuss, then both would speak in French and fast! My mother was the communicator. She would start almost every conversation. My father listened. Spoke infrequently but when he did so, it had an impact. I didn’t understand the nuances of those interactions and because that is the model I grew up in guess what?
