In this episode of The Rewrite Club, Deepa Mattoo, CEO of YWCA Toronto and former Executive Director of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, shares her journey from Kashmir to Canada. She talks about choosing law when her family wanted a doctor, her early work with abandoned widows in India, and arriving in Canada as a sponsored spouse. She also describes the slow, hard years of rebuilding a career as an internationally trained professional.
We also get into her work on gender-based violence and immigration law, why she believes criminalizing forced marriage in Canada has kept survivors from seeking help, and how vicarious trauma shaped her approach to trauma-informed lawyering.
Her biggest lesson: give yourself permission to try. She almost didn't requalify as a lawyer in Canada, and says she's glad someone pushed her.Follow The Rewrite Club so you don't miss new episodes with founders, leaders, and people rewriting their own stories.

She grew up selling mangoes at a market stall just to help her family get by. Today, she runs a company deciding who gets access to venture capital funding and the insecurity never fully went away.
In this episode of The Rewrite Club, host Su sits down with Argentina Beltran, founder and CEO of Inclusive AI, to talk about the funding gap in venture capital, the bias built into how founders get evaluated, and the personal cost of trying to belong in a new country.
Argentina traces her path from a childhood in the Philippines to immigrating to Canada at 21, building a career across aviation and finance, and eventually founding a platform designed to close the funding gap for underrepresented entrepreneurs. She also opens up about a regret she still carries choosing not to teach her children their native language!
This episode covers:
Why female founders are asked how they'll avoid failing, while male founders are asked how they'll succeed
The difference between being "responsible" and being a leader
How childhood scarcity shaped her approach to business, long before she had the language for it
What it takes to rebuild your identity and confidence in a new country
Why growth isn't linear and why feeling stuck doesn't mean you've stopped growing
Argentina is also the author of What We Teach the Machines, which explores how human bias shapes the AI systems being built today.

Can you really fall in love with AI? Caitlin Knight, founder of Oxley AI, says yes and it's more complicated than you think.

In this episode, Caitlin opens up about her divorce, dating as a single mom of three, the hate mail she received while building her AI companion app for women, and the moment she found herself emotionally connected to a rival's chatbot. We talk shame, intimacy, AI ethics, and what it really means to be human in a world where technology understands us better than ever.

This isn't a simple "AI is good" or "AI is bad" conversation it's honest, uncomfortable, and worth hearing.

Your resume might be getting rejected by a robot before a human ever sees it and that's just the beginning of this conversation.

In this episode of The Rewrite Club, host Su talks with Ambarish Sharma and Chetan Salwan, of Cygnisoft Staffing, a recruitment company operating across the U.S., Canada, and India. Both spent years navigating the American immigration system on H-1B visas before building a business that now sits on the other side of the hiring table.

The conversation moves fluidly between the tactical and the personal. Ambarish and Chetan explain what AI-driven applicant tracking systems are actually doing to resumes right now, why a LinkedIn profile increasingly matters more than a polished CV, and why so many companies are quietly shifting from full-time roles to contract work. They share real cases from their own recruiting desk — including one candidate whose three years of experience beat another's eight, and another whose interview ended almost as soon as it began.

But the episode's real weight comes from what's underneath the hiring advice: what it means to be reduced to a number by a system that wasn't built with you in mind, and the ordinary night one of them decided to stop accepting that.

Whether you're actively job hunting, quietly wondering if there's a better path forward, or simply curious what's really happening on the other side of your job applications, this episode offers a rare, honest look — from two people who've lived both sides of the hiring process.

In this debut episode of The Rewrite Club by Su, host Su sits down with Alexa Marie Grant, a Scottish-Filipino , business consultant, and now Miss World Canada 2026 to unpack the gap between how she has been perceived and who she actually is. They talk about the diary entry she wrote at 14 that predicted this exact moment, her mom who gave her an "all or nothing" ultimatum before her first pageant, the backstage breakdown after a loss that taught her more than any win could, and the adaptive, color-coded instruments she's now building for children with disabilities who don't have easy access to music. This isn't a pageant story. It's a story about what happens when you stop performing the "serious" version of yourself and start showing up as all of it : the dreamer, the musician, the consultant, the girl who once needed music just to get through the day now represents Canada in World stages!

In this episode, we cover:

-The childhood illness that was misdiagnosed for months, and how music became her only outlet

-The diary entry she wrote at 14, watching Miss World on TV, that predicted this exact moment

-Why her mom gave her an "all or nothing" ultimatum before her first-ever pageant

-The severe anxiety she felt before her first Q&A and the advice from her mom that helped her win it

-What it actually means to train for a pageant: walking, posture, and learning to answer with depth

-The pageant she didn't place in, and the honest reason she says she was "focused on the wrong thing"

-Her contrarian take on pageant body image: "It's not here's a dress, you fit into it. It's here's you, and the dress will come for you."

-How she's building adaptive, color-coded instruments for children with Special Needs through her Beauty With a Purpose project

-Living a dual identity: Alexa Marie Grant , the consultant, and Alexa Marie Grant, Miss World Canada

-Why her mom is her biggest mentor and the advice that shaped how she thinks about ambition
