In which the narrator awakens to captivity among the Black Kendah and learns of their venerable god, the Child, and its sinister adversary, the elephant Jana, amidst growing omens and a peculiar, devastating hailstorm that befalls their tormentors. Observing fearful rituals and ominous portents, he witnesses nature itself seeming to cast the first dread curse upon the land, shrouding all in a sombre veil of impending doom.
