Welcome back to The Rideshare Zone! In Episode 24, your host Shawn (The Colorado Rideshare Guy) breaks down the wildest, most urgent, and downright bizarre news hitting the gig economy this week. From legal clampdowns on Elon Musk’s camera-only autonomous tech to literal robots taking over hostage negotiations, we are covering it all.🎙️
What’s Happening in This Episode:
Tesla Cybertaxis Banned?A proposed New Jersey state bill could effectively ban Tesla’s Cybertaxi fleet by requiring autonomous vehicles to have at least three different sensing technologies. Lawmakers argue that camera-only systems just aren't safe enough for public roads yet.
The Border Patrol Rideshare TrapU.S. Border Patrol has issued a massive warning to gig drivers. Transnational cartels are using third-party rideshare accounts to trick unsuspecting drivers into smuggling operations. If you accept these suspicious fares, you could face immediate detention and felony human smuggling charges.
Waymo’s "Sleeper" Crisis & Car BirthsAustin first responders are dealing with a wave of "sleepers"—passengers who fall asleep so deeply in robotaxis that remote assistants have to call 9-1-1 to wake them up. Meanwhile, Babies are being born in the back of a Waymo.
Heroic Food Delivery & Sidewalk Speed DemonsMeet the incredible delivery driver who saved two teenagers from a burning pickup truck crash.
Predatory Apps & Global Gig News in Argentina, delivery apps are doubling as loan sharks, trapping drivers in debt cycles with interest rates reaching up to 700% annually.
We also look at Dubai's newly certified commercial "Vertiport" for flying air taxis!
⚠️ DRIVERS: If you get a suspicious request in a remote border area with an absent account holder, CANCEL THE RIDE IMMEDIATELY and report it! Protect yourself and your vehicle.

Welcome to the 23rd episode of The Rideshare Zone with your host, Shawn, The Colorado Rideshare Guy. In this episode, we dive deep into the chaotic Fourth of July Waymo gridlock, wild updates on Tesla's Robotaxi, terrifying driver safety reports, and the highly controversial Fong-Gillen Amendment that could give rideshare and delivery giants massive legal immunity. Buckle up and jump into the chat!🛑
📌 Tonight's Agenda:
Waymo's Holiday Nightmare: Waymo vehicles stalled in San Francisco traffic during Independence Day celebrations. Some people reported being stuck for up to four hours due to the congestion.
Tesla Cybercab Goes Solo in FL: Tesla rolled out its Robotaxi service in West Miami. This marks their fifth city launch, and for the first time, the cars are running without a safety monitor on board.
Tesla for the Blind?: Elon Musk stated that Robotaxis must meet the needs of the blind. Promotional materials at the National Federation of the Blind's convention showcased Braille labels on hazard buttons and interior door releases.
No More Brake Pedals?: The NHTSA is planning to remove the brake pedal requirement on autonomous vehicles by changing FMVSS No. 135.
Severe Driver Safety Alerts: We cover two horrific incidents, including a Delaware Lyft driver who was carjacked at gunpoint and robbed of his vehicle by three masked suspects. We also discuss a Kenosha man facing felony charges for sexually assaulting his Lyft driver during a ride to work.
WTF is the Fong-Gillen Amendment?: Amendment FONG_041 aims to protect network companies like Uber and Lyft from vicarious liability under state or local laws. If passed, plaintiffs would have to prove gross negligence rather than standard negligence. This protection would broadly apply to passenger ridesharing giants and delivery apps like DoorDash, UberEats, and Instacart.
Wisk Aero Whistleblower Lawsuit: A former employee is suing the Boeing-backed eVTOL startup. The lawsuit claims the whistleblower was fired after reporting that the autonomous air taxi software bypassed basic aviation software testing requirements.
Joby & Toyota Joint Venture: Toyota will conduct 51% of the manufacturing for the S4 Air Taxi. This agreement gives Toyota exclusive rights to build the S4 and ties a $250 million investment to certification and production targets.
