What do we do with what we know?
In the fifth and final episode of Beyond the Badge: Rethinking School Safety Through Social-Emotional Competence, Dr. Lashawnte McCray-Sarvis moves the conversation from research to action and challenges educators, administrators, School Resource Officers, and district leaders to reconsider what creating a safe school truly requires.
Throughout the series, listeners have explored the role of School Resource Officers, adult social-emotional competence, relationship building, de-escalation, restorative practices, and research surrounding SRO preparation and school safety. Now, Episode 5 brings those ideas together with practical recommendations schools and districts can use to strengthen their approach to safety.
Dr. McCray-Sarvis examines key areas for action, including intentional SRO selection and training, administrator-SRO partnerships, professional development for school staff, student-SRO relationship building, crisis-response and de-escalation protocols, restorative practices, data monitoring, and ongoing evaluation.
But the conversation extends beyond the SRO.
Teachers, administrators, counselors, support staff, and other adults all contribute to the emotional climate of a school. Their communication, emotional regulation, decision-making, relationships, and responses during difficult moments can influence whether a situation escalates or moves toward resolution.
The central message is clear:
Safer schools require more than security measures. They require adults who know how to recognize, communicate with, respond to, and de-escalate students.
Episode 5 closes the Beyond the Badge series with a challenge for every school and district:
“The question isn't simply whether we have an officer in the building. The question is whether every adult responsible for safety has the competencies necessary to create it.”
Beyond the Badge is a five-part special series of The Road to an Effective Classroom Environment, bringing research, leadership, relationships, and practical strategies together to rethink how we create safer and more supportive schools.
Connection Before Crisis.
