While some people have received some surprise tax bills when filing their returns, corporations continue to avoid paying tax — thanks to a cocktail of tax credits, loopholes, and exemptions.

According to a report from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), Amazon (AMZN) will pay nothing in federal income taxes for the second year in a row.

Thanks to the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), Amazon’s federal tax responsibility is 21% (down from 35% in previous years). But with the help of tax breaks, according to corporate filings, Amazon won’t be paying a dime to Uncle Sam despite posting more than $11.2 billion in profits in 2018.

As they investigate President Donald Trump, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee will hold their first official hearing in what they are calling an impeachment investigation.

Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s outspoken, loyal former campaign manager, is scheduled to appear Tuesday to discuss the report by former special counsel Robert Mueller. But it’s unlikely that Democrats will get much new information as they decide whether to draft articles of impeachment against the president.

“Excited about the opportunity to remind the American people today there was no collusion no obstruction,” Lewandowski, who is considering a Senate run in New Hampshire, tweeted in the hours before the hearing. “There were lots of angry Democrats who tried to take down a duly elected President. In 1862, 38 men of the Dakota Native American tribe were hanged in what’s been described as the largest mass execution in U.S. history. President Lincoln ordered the killings after the Santee Sioux uprising the previous summer left 490 white settlers dead.

Now, more than 150 years later, Lisa Yankton, a Minneapolis-based poet and member of the Dakota tribe, fears this history will be forgotten. So she’s retelling it through her poetry. The Dakota people still recognize the hangings each year, but the event is seldom discussed in wider U.S. culture, she said. “[It] is the largest mass hanging in the history of the United States and no one talks about it"

Pike Island, Dakota name Wita Tanka, is an island at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers in the southwestern part of Saint Paul in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota, U.S.. The island is now part of Fort Snelling State Park. It is a portion of the 100,000 acres (400 km2) of land purchased from the Mdewakanton Sioux Indians by Zebulon Pike in September 1805.[1] Pike's Purchase was later to become Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, and Saint Paul. The U.S. government wanted to build a fort to protect American interests in the fur trade in the region, and Pike negotiated the treaty.
