The Rock Church of Fenton Sermons

When God spoke to Moses through the burning bush, he had been living exiled from Egypt for 40 years, likely oppressed by the guilt of his sin. During that time and for the last 360 years before that, the Israelites were enslaved, groaning under the weight of the burden they had to bear each day. In our lives, we carry heavy burdens of guilt, fear, and our baggage. When God speaks to Moses in the burning bush, He assures Moses that He is aware of the suffering of His people and He is there to rescue them. The God of the universe is aware of our burdens and His desire is that rather than living oppressed, we live free, experiencing His deliverance from the weights that hold us back in our faith.

Often in life, we find ourselves like Moses did, staring at a burning bush. We observe the power of God doing something incredible, but rather than focusing on the fact that God is making the miracle happen, we get distracted by the bush or the sign of God’s power itself. We stare at the bush in amazement of the power that the bush has and rather than worship God who is causing the bush to not be consumed, we begin to idolize the bush and worship the creation rather than the creator. We chase after more of the bush rather than chasing after more of Jesus. The danger? If we only fix our eyes on signs of God at work, they aren’t ever fixed on Jesus.

We may think we know God because we know His work, but our hearts are actually far from Him because we don’t know His Son. If we do know Jesus, we may mistakenly think that we are only close to Him if a bush is burning. Its not the bush that will save us. Its not the bush that we need present in our lives. In the end, all we need is Jesus. What are your eyes fixed on???

Believing that God can use you and do incredible things in your life is great. Dreaming up crazy ideas of how you can be used by God to disciple others is even better! But if you never do anything about it, then you are just wasting your time. Believing and Dreaming require a follow through - ACTION. James says it this way, Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” Your ACTION shows your BELIEF. Your ACTION is a step of faith and obedience that leads to fulfilling your God-given DREAMS.
