  • Managing Mindset Part 1

Emotions are part of who we are.

The fact of the matter is humans are emotional creatures. We are meaning seeking, emotional, creatures. We always have been, and we always will be. As million-dollar consultant Alan Wise says, “Logic makes people think, but emotion makes people act.” And that action is both in the positive and in the negative.

If you’ve worked with me for more than a day, you know that I’m always talking about how as humans in this modern world we’re like an iceberg. Twenty percent of who we are is above the waterline, and that’s that modern world we live in, with meetings and cashflow reports, and soccer games for the kids.

But there’s another eighty percent that’s down below the water line of that iceberg and that’s what sunk Titanic, because there was this hubris or arrogance of not paying attention to what was below the water line.

That’s the same for us. The fact of the matter is we are emotional creatures. How do we use this knowledge to manage our emotional temperature, our “mindset” if you will, and that of those around us?

Join me by the fire-pit for part one of our discussion on, “Managing Mindset”.

I’ll see you on the Rooftop,

  • From Yellow Ribbons To Dog Sh*T

The dismantling of the last trusted institution in America…and what you should know about it.

There is an epic erosion of bridging trust in America. Without trust in certain institutions, we are destined to slip back into shadow tribalism. One of those institutions is the U.S. Military.

An alarming poll by the Reagan Institute points out a trend that we need to be aware of as Americans and that we need alter as leaders. Join me in a lively discussion of how I think we can do that together as a “Rooftop Nation.”

  • Leaving Tracks During Rough Times

This has been a rough patch for many of us hasn’t it.

Many of us are still struggling. Here is the thing…struggle, according to high performance expert Daniel Coyle, is a biological necessity. One of the best ways to navigate this struggle and thrive while others are merely surviving is to leave your tracks in this world. Even in the roughest of times, if we focus on leaving tracks, we walk a different path that lights our way while others tread through darkness.

Join me on a journey into the Appalachian Mountains with my Dad to learn more about how you can leave your tracks in rough times.

  • 3 Reasons Why Grinding Isn't Enough

I've seen that look in the mirror. When I looked at myself after grinding and grinding and grinding, well, there's a predictable outcome to that. And it's generally not a good one. I want to share with you today three reasons why grinding to get through a particularly persistent long-term crisis is not a good idea.

First of all, is that when you grind for too long, you put yourself in a sympathetic state, you are in that fight, flight or freeze mode all the time. Your cortisol levels are jacked. Your adrenaline levels are jacked. You are taking big slugs on the devil's cocktail. Now that's great when you're at this elevated state, when you are trying to get away from a snake in the bushes, but it's not great when you are trying to overcome a cashflow problem that is going to take at least eight weeks.

The body is just not designed for that state, it never has been. The body is designed to go to an elevated sympathetic state, to fight, to flee or to freeze, and then to drop down into a parasympathetic state of calm and connect, where the body can metabolize that energy through emotion and breath, and then it reset itself.

Join me by the fire-pit and let’s talk about, “3 Reasons Why Grinding Isn’t Enough”.

  • How Do We Return to the Light?

How do we return to the light? And, by the light, I'm talking about better days. I'm talking about better ground. I'm talking about thriving instead of surviving. I'm talking about order instead of chaos coming out of this pandemic.

The first step is that you have to own your life. You have to have agency in your life. These days, it seems to me that as I look around, not a whole lot of people are owning their life. They are giving their power away. They are giving their agency away to politicians or to pop stars or culture warriors, whatever you want to call them.

We are giving our own agency away. And with that goes our personal responsibility and our self-actualization for taking that deep breath at the end of our life. I believe we have to own our life.

So join me by the fire-pit and let’s discuss, “How Do We Return to the Light”.

  • John Bell and Scott Mann

Polarization, division, and low-trust have created a very difficult environment for us to lead in. People are walking around in fear and anger - induced states. Understanding our own human nature and the context we’re living in is noticeably absent in leadership today. My guest John Bell is an unconventional conflict resolution expert and pioneer in helping leaders recognize the invisible truths of their own nature to lead through high - conflict, low - trust situations. Your going to learn a ton in this episode!

  • What Will Re-Emergence Look Like?

I’m hearing from a lot of leaders that say, "We're probably not going to fully come back to work in the traditional style. There's going to be a hybrid approach."

This is the big buzzword right now, this hybrid approach, there's been so much cost savings at an organizational level on not having to maintain these office buildings and all the travel, you better believe that organizationally there's going to be emphasis on this hybrid approach where not everybody, in fact, a lot of people don't come back to work.

It is important that we talk about what re-emergence will look like, because I don't think that the image or the picture in people's heads necessarily matches up with reality. There will be some “below-the-waterline” realities, as we say in Rooftop Leadership, that maybe you're not thinking about.

So join me by the fire-pit and let’s discuss, “What Re-Emergence Will Look Like”.
