In this episode, Malia and Bianca speak to their Micronesian guest (Marshallese/Puerto Rican), Jasmine Henry, about mixed and blended families, NAMES and family status, churches in the islands, law & business and the effects of colourism she experienced growing up due to her ethnic heritage. At the young age of 25, Jasmine is an Assistant Attorney General at the Office of the Attorney General in the District Attorney Office of Marshal Islands as well entrepreneur of brand label Lazy Jays and the soon to open, Lazy Jays Cafe. You get to hear her heart for her people and the next generation of Marshallese peoples in the practical and innovative ways she is embellishing the narrative of the term “going home and giving back”. In this episode, Malia and Bianca wanted to have the conversation about something that is a real issue amongst our three enthnogeographic groupings in the Pacific Islands. To some, it’s a heavy topic and close to home. To others, it will be a new insight. These girls aren’t ignorant to the colourism and the exclusivity of our interactions at times as people groups. As young Melanesian and Polynesian women, they wanted to have a chat about how they have navigated these issues with as much laughter, honesty, confession and love as possible. They talk unity, avoiding the sun, colourism, inclusivity, the term “plastic” and so much more! So buckle up and be prepared to extend that table at the end of this one!
