Summary

Camping at night at Lake Okobogee – teenage girl and younger boy outside by the fire. Mother inside the camper. 

Full cup of cold coffee on a saucer does the “T-Rex is coming jiggle” as lights flash outside and there’s an earthquake. For a camper, there are a ton of breakable dishes - more than we have in our immobile apartment. 

Kevin screams for his mom as she flops around like a fish, when she reaches the doorknob she burns her hand. 

Finally opening the door, Kevin says Ruby, his sister is gone. 

Why didn’t Kevin try to open the camper? Why was the door handle searingly hot, but nothing else was impacted by heat?

 

About Okoboji

Actual spelling O K O B O J I, spelling in “Conduit” O K O B O G E E. In reality, Iowa's small town Okoboji which is located on west lake, is surrounded by mostly flat terrain, but was shown in "Conduit" as being surrounded by mountains.  The episode also places the lake near Sioux City, Iowa. They are actually more than 110 miles apart. Mulder also mentions trout fishing, there are no trout in lake Okoboji. 

FBI HEADQUARTERS

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Chief Blevins informs Special Agent Dana Scully of a 302 that Blevins has indirectly received from Agent Fox Mulder. A 302 is effectively petitioning the FBI to assign a case number to a tabloid headline – specifically, "Teen Taken From Tent By Aliens."

This is where Mulder’s past gets further explanation. 

In frustration with Mulder, Blevins tells Scully that the otherwise unexplained Blevins shows Scully case X-40253 – which concerns the disappearance of Mulder's sister, Samantha, an incident that happened years ago – and considers that Mulder's personal quest to discover his sister's fate is clouding his judgment. Scully disagrees with this suggestion and asks to not only talk to Mulder but to also make a recommendation to Blevins on the subject, before he disallows the 302.

In the basement office of the X-Files unit, Scully challenges Mulder on the validity of his request. Mulder replies the disappearance occurred at Lake Okobogee, a known UFO Hotspot. He also lets Scully know that one of four well-documented UFO sightings from 1967 involved a young girl scout, now the missing girl's mother, Darlene Morris.

SIOUX CITY, IOWA

The next day (on August 26), Mulder and Scully arrive at the Morris residence in Sioux City, Iowa and are welcomed inside by Darlene, who tries to introduce them to Kevin but he ignores them, all the while scribbling something on paper. Mulder studies a row of family portrait photographs on a mantelpiece and affectionately touches one of Ruby Morris, Scully noticing he feels personally connected to the case. Darlene gives a statement to the agents, claiming she and Kevin have been traumatized by the loss of Ruby, such as Kevin having been acting strangely since the disappearance. Questioning Darlene, Scully implies a suspicion Ruby may have been taken by Charles, Darlene's former husband, though Darlene herself denies this, insisting a UFO was once again involved.

She realizes Mulder has the same opinion but that Scully is more skeptical. Mulder tries to talk with Kevin but finds him busily watching static on the TV set and copying a binary string onto a pad of paper. Kevin insists the transmission is coming from the TV, even though Mulder observes only static.

At the Sioux City Police station Mulder faxes Kevin's transmission fragment to Danny Bernstein at the FBI Cryptography Section. In a simultaneous telephone call Fox promises Danny tickets to a Redskins game as compensation for attempting to decipher the binary string.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

At dusk, a business man, George Usher, walks onto a street in Baltimore, Maryland and strolls to his car, unknowingly watched by a pair of menacing yellow eyes from within a storm drain.

After Usher exits an elevator in an office building, the doors to the elevator open again, but the cabin is gone. The cables in the open shaft tremble, as if they are being used for climbing. Usher makes a call to his wife and then leaves his office for a cup of coffee. As he leaves, a vent in his office is quietly unscrewed and starts to open. Usher returns to his office where, after his door is suddenly closed from inside, sounds of a struggle can be heard and the door handle repeatedly rattles. The noises abruptly end as a large dent is smashed in the door. As Usher's coffee drips on the floor and he lies dead, the vent is screwed back in place.

 

Act One

WASHINGTON, D.C.

FBI Agents Tom Colton and Dana Scully speak in a Washington, D.C. restaurant.

FBI Agents Dana Scully and Tom Colton are having lunch together in a Washington, D.C. restaurant. They are old FBI Academy classmates and make small talk about their careers. Colton is a highly ambitious agent who speaks teasingly to Scully about her partner, Fox Mulder, whom Scully admits is a little "out there". Colton then starts to tell Scully about a case he has been assigned that involves a series of three victims, the latest being George Usher, who were each killed in a location where there were no obvious entry points and found with their livers missing, with signs indicating they were ripped out by bare hands. Scully admits the case may be an X-File. Colton is determined to solve the case himself but asks for Scully's help, reluctantly agreeing that she can include Mulder in the investigation.

They chat about former classmates, including Marty Neil who had recently been promoted to Supervisory Special Agent, after having lucked into the World Trade Center bombing (1993).

 

CRIME SCENE

GEORGE USHER'S OFFICE

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

In Usher's office, Mulder queries Scully as to why he wasn't personally asked to help with the case, seemingly surprised when Scully mentions he has an unflattering reputation, and asks if she also thinks he is "spooky". Colton arrives, apologizing for being late, and is formally introduced to Mulder by Scully; he asks Mulder, in a jesting and off-handed manner, whether be believes aliens are responsible for the murder. Mulder plays up to Colton's expectation of him as a kook, expounding on his own otherworldly ideas, before leaving Scully and Colton to converse. Mulder discovers a bizarrely elongated fingerprint on the vent that opened during Usher's murder but Colton dismisses the possibility that anyone could have crawled through it.

Mulder shows Scully the fingerprints of the proposed suspect.

In the X-Files office, Mulder shows Scully fingerprints that tie the recent murders to a series of ten related murders in the Baltimore area reported in an X-File. Scully protests that Colton never mentioned these earlier murders, and Mulder suspects Colton is probably not aware of them as five of them occurred in Powhatan Mill in 1963, and the previous five occurred in 1933. And although there is no fingerprint evidence, there was an unsolved murder involving a victim whose liver was ripped out in 1903 (when fingerprinting was still in its infancy).

Mulder concludes from the pattern of the earlier murders that two more are due to be committed this year. Scully's first thought is that Mulder believes the recent murders are copycats of the earlier ones. Mulder says that is not possible, the fi

In a forest at night, a young woman tumbles around in a long nightgown. She ends up in a small clearing and sees an immense light growing over a nearby hill. A large vortex of leaves starts and a male figure approaches from the light. The figure stands over her as the light engulfs them both.

 

COLLUM NATIONAL FOREST,

NORTHWEST OREGON

The next morning, two uniformed men inspect the woman's corpse with a team of coroners. One explains there’s no sign of battery or sexual assault, although how they determine this is questionable because the dead woman is laying prone in the dirt. It does appear she does have two small bumps on her lower back (resembling vampire bite moles). A trail of dried blood runs from the woman's nose to her mouth. Which again begs the question, what are your examination techniques, sirs?

Detective Miles, one of the two uniformed men, recognizes the young woman as Karen Swenson, since she used to go to school with his son. As Miles walks away in a hurry, Truitt calls after him. The coroner asks if Karen and the detective’s son were in the high school class of 1989, implying that other members of her class have died in the same way as Karen Swenson.

 

Act One

FBI HEADQUARTERS,

WASHINGTON, DC

 

Special Agent Dana Scully(!) enters the FBI building for a meeting with Division Chief Scott Blevins. Inside, Blevins questions her about her past work while a mysterious man smoking a cigarette silently watches. 

Smoking in the office, can you imagine in 2021?

Scully is a medical doctor who has been working within the FBI for about two years. Blevins notifies her that she is being assigned to work with Fox Mulder on the X-Files, a group of cases that involve paranormal or inexplicable phenomena.

Scully was recruited by the FBI out of medical school and felt she could distinguish herself. Obviously, she's intelligent and has worked her way through FBI school. What has she been doing the past 2 years? She knows of Mulder by reputation. 

Blevins asks what she knows about Mulder. She explains that Mulder is an Oxford educated psychologist who was once the best analyst in the violent crimes section. He helped catch a serial killer. Eventually he became so obsessed with the unexplained that he became a joke and was banished into the basement as “The FBIs most unwanted”. 

What happened to send her to the basement with "the FBI's Most Unwanted"?

Scully is assigned to write reports about Mulder’s cases. 

 

In the building's basement, Scully meets Mulder in his office. This is the big reveal. It’s gross how attractive he is. Queue gif on repeat of the Fox Mulder reveal. Even in those glasses he's #HotMulder.

After a brief intro Mulder dives into the Swenson case. He shows her several slides on a projector of Karen Swenson's dead body and reveals that a strange organic substance has been found near the two marks on the woman's back (aka Vampire bite moles). He also shows her two slides of bodies found in Sturgis, South Dakota and Shamrock, Texas, where both the two spots and the substance in the surrounding tissue were found. 

Although Mulder seems to believe that the cases are somehow linked to aliens, Scully argues that science will uncover a more logical explanation. We're setting up the believer/skeptic dichotomy pretty heavily in the pilot.

Mulder tells her that three of Karen Swenson's classmates (class of 1989) have also died in mysterious circumstances and states that he and Scully will leave to investigate the deaths early the next morning.
