In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Arjen Robben drew a game winning penalty kick in the dying minutes of his Round of 16 game against Mexico. There was a grey area surrounding the validity of the foul. Robben had clearly done his best to exaggerate the trip. This questionable flop could have been prevented, by the referee no less. All he had to do was penalize Robben for previous flops in the game. So why didn't he?
Four years later, the in-game antics of players have only gotten worse. Still, players escape without punishment for clear embellishment. If FIFA wants flopping out of its own game, what's stopping them?
