Luke Geraty talks with Susanne Maynes about women’s leadership, biblical mutuality, and how churches interpret disputed passages in 1 Timothy and 1 Corinthians. Maynes draws on her own experience of harmful prophetic counsel and her study of Scripture to explain why she believes women’s gifts and callings should be fully welcomed in the church. Additionally, they discuss the biblical role of prophecy, and how charismatic communities can practice discernment. Susanne argues that prophecy should build up the whole community, be carefully evaluated, and not be diminished in ways that marginalize women’s contributions.

Gary Tyra (D. Min., Fuller Seminary) is Professor of Biblical and Practical Theology at Vanguard University of Southern California. An ordained minister with the Assemblies of God, Gary has also served as the senior for pastor for three churches over a 27-year period, one of which was a church plant.
