  • My Life In The Midst Of A Manhunt - Navigating Armageddon

David gives a vibrant inside-perspective of how he was literally at the center of what has unfolded into one of the largest manhunts in the Midwest. Admittedly, the first step is to consider the campus unsecure until we’ve walked the grounds, pulled each door handle, and then do it all over again. I’m fortunate to work with a leader that “gets” environmental security. JANESVILLE (Wis) MANHUNT. Officers are looking for a Joseph A. Jakubowski, a 32-year-old man who’s considered armed and dangerous said he sent a 161-page manifesto to President Trump. Jakubowski is wanted in connection with the theft of guns from the Armageddon gun and ammo shop. A car registered to Jakubowski was found burned nearby, and he's suspected in the arson, officials said. A quick review of the Wisconsin Circuit Court online records search reveals that Joseph Jakubowski has been charged or ticketed 32 times since 2001. The sheriff's office said it learned Thursday that he had made threats to steal weapons and use them against public officials or at an unspecified school. However, it was now mid-morning, and most school shooting occur at the start of the school day. This was favorable news for area schools, many which were in lockdown or had cancelled outdoor events. AFFIRMATION-SEEKING. A February, 2013 article titled: The Final Word: Why Killers Write Manifestos, Marc Lallanilla of Live Science Contributor wrote: "All of these people think they've been wronged," said David A. Clayman, Ph.D., a clinical and forensic psychologist. "These people collect wrongs and they seek out affirmation of their righteousness," said Clayman. "They saw the world as against them. The common theme is a grudge." Look for this in Joseph Jakubowski. He even had a friend film him applying postage stamps to his manifesto and depositing it to the mail receptacle – not to mention a recent YouTube rant referenced, but removed from public view. LINGERING QUESTIONS. As this manhunt drags on, people will ease their guards. You won’t hear people asking about targets as it seems that this man had opportunities and didn’t act upon them. Perhaps he really wanted to be heard. Still this probably won’t end well. An armed and dangerous man is being pursued. He has a history of no regard for authority, is a loner, and certainly realizes that capture means living out his years in prison. ADVICE. I urge you to be aware of your environment and changes in your environment. Just because a threat now seems dissipated or distant doesn’t mean that a police pursuit won’t bring the chaos to your street. Also, harden your own targets by locking doors and leaving lights on at night until this matter has been resolved. FORMATS. • Logotherapy & Reclaiming Youth From The Existential Vacuum

Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy is a relevant framework and also a confusing term as it makes one think of branding and not the Greek word logos, which is “meaning”. In this podcast, I share why it is important to make youth aware of Logotherapy as a perspective to counter the growing rhetoric of determinism and The Butterfly Effect that are eroding belief in free will and therefore distancing people from a sense of control over self or environment. Such disempowerment, I believe, destroys agency and purpose and therefore contributes to personal anxieties, depression and an overall ability to set goals and live a non-centric lifestyle. Perspective taking is a deficit in today’s youth that are IV hooked to the steady drip of social media affirmation. A quick search in jurn.org will discover countless studies of the negative relationships between youth (and all adult) mental health and addiction to social media applications. I believe that Logotherapy should be taught to all youth. WHO WAS VIKTOR FRANKL? Viktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychologist who founded what he called the field of “Logotherapy”, which has been dubbed the “Third Viennese School of Psychology” (following Freud and Alder). Logotherapy developed in and through Frankl’s personal experience in the Nazi concentration camp. The years spent there deeply affected his understanding of reality and the meaning of human life. His most popular book, Man’s Search for Meaning, chronicles his experience in the camp as well as the development of Logotherapy. During his time there, he found that those around him who did not lose their sense of purpose and meaning in life were able to survive much longer than those who had lost their way. MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING. Dr. Perrodin provides several chilling, yet reflective accounts from Frankl’s hallmark book. For example, Dr. Frankl cautioned that a prisoner was never awoken from a nightmare as the reality of life in the camp was certainly worse than anything conjured in the mind. He also talked of how he volunteered to care for typhus patients, although such an act very well could have brought upon his own physical demise. WHAT IS LOGOTHERAPY? It is loosely interpreted as therapy through finding meaning as “logos” translates to “meaning” in Greek. However, Dr. Perrodin explains why he interprets Logotherapy as less of a therapy and more of a framework. Logotherapy has 3 basic assumptions (1) Life has meaning under all circumstances (2) People have a will to meaning (3) People have freedom under all circumstances to activate the will to meaning and to find meaning. EXISTENTIAL VACUUM. Frankl’s way to describe life that has no meaning and this perpetual condition creates a void that we aim to satiate with drugs, violence, food, and other vices, such as modern-day social media -- yet the void will be a black hole and we will be forced to intellectually reason with our purpose to live or to die. • Debunking The Butterfly Effect & Embracing Chaos Theory

The Butterfly Effect is a false premise of illustrating how small initial differences may lead to large unforeseen consequences over time. This is nothing more than cause and effect and yet the Butterfly Effect is spilling across the sciences as some belief that every event has a singular, infinitesimal known origin. It is absurd to propose, and yet to scaffold with a mathematical formula, a relationship between a butterfly flapping its wings in New Mexico as the beginnings of an eventual hurricane in China. Don’t succumb to such hype. COMPLEX SYSTEMS WITH COUNTLESS VARIABLES. We can never know all the initial conditions of a complex system in sufficient (perfect) detail. CHAOS THEORY. The Butterfly Effect’s logical replacement is Chaos Theory, which describes transitions between order and disorder. These transitions are often surprising and nonlinear. Chaos is the science of surprises, of the nonlinear and the unpredictable. It teaches us to expect the unexpected. Gravity is linear. We understand gravity and can mathematically calculate its influence on items. Crowd response to a terrorist attack is nonlinear. We know from studying such events that certain tendencies tend to arise, but crowd behavior is not predictable and also dependent upon the forces within the crowd. If leaders rapidly emerge, a crowd stabilizes and will generally follow those giving directives. Nobody could have predicted the manner in which chaos theory played out in the extraordinary boat evacuation of 500,000 people from Lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. Cause, effect, context, situation, actors – all combine to produce the effect. When you hear someone talk of the butterfly effect, direct them to the nearest flower garden or to the library. FORMATS. • Mainstreaming, Inclusion, Tolerance, Acceptance - Oh My! Unsnarling Conflated Terminology

“The Safety Doc” untangles the conflated terms mainstreaming and inclusion as well as the seemingly synonymous words tolerance and inclusion. A clear-cut definition of each designation postures the listener to grapple with the practices of debate, protests, and the non-aggression principle - all of which are powerful contributors to a society that is safe and orderly for its citizens. Dr. Perrodin’s discussion centers the public school context and examples are situated to that context and situation. Let’s begin with MAINSTREAMING. Think of a global positioning device worn by each child (just imagine it). In this universe, one can physically pinpoint the location of the student. If the child is located in the “regular education” classroom / specials (art, music PE), lunch, recess then that child is MAINSTREAMED. Mainstreaming does not mean that the child is being included in the classroom curriculum and to claim PASSIVE benefit is an incredible stretch. This is often justified as “exposure” to peers without disabilities. If that is what’s happening, then refer to it as what it is - mainstreaming. If Mainstreaming is passive and implied, then INCLUSION is active and explicit. For example, when a child is being included in a regular education setting, he or she is actively engaged in educational instruction and activities and the teacher holds an expectation of academic rigor. Exceptions exist. Dr. Perrodin straddles the line of mainstreaming and inclusion as he describes a girl with an anxiety disorder that “Skyped” into a regular education classroom, but for the most part, there’s not much gray between mainstream and inclusion. MYTH OF FULL INCLUSION. Many schools tout a mantra of “We are full inclusion for students with disabilities.” That’s simply not accurate - and if it is accurate, then it’s out of compliance with the intent of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). TOLERANCE. Simply put, tolerance is adherence to the Non-Aggression Principle. However, tolerance is a basement-level threshold. We are better than tolerance - a term that implies that one has to actively suppress some level of discrimination or rage. Teach Tolerance - really? ACCEPTANCE. This is a step, well, actually a flight of stairs above, mere tolerance. It’s a safer distance away from the tinderbox. Acceptance is active. It is seeking to understand another position. The great philosopher Aristotle countered clubs and stones with the art of rhetoric, persuasion and reasoning - in short, Aristotle created the framework for debate. And remember, to be informed of another’s position doesn’t mandate that you must befriend the other person (or group). Practice acceptance and you will be informed about existing information as well as able to consider newly-presented information that might (or might not) alter your beliefs. FORMATS. • Discovering The Awesomeness Of Multiplayer Video Games - Interview With Seann Dikkers PhD

In 2011, 97% of youth in American played some type of video game each week! Gaming is trending across all generations with millions of people “running into” the world of video games – including the young as well as the elderly. Video games, for example, are being used in senior care homes to refresh memory, build hand-eye coordination and foster social interaction through games of Wii Bowling. VIDEO GAME IS JUST ANOTHER FORM OF MEDIA. Dr. Dikkers regards video gaming the same as other media such as movies and music. It has become part of our society and just like heavy metal music, is not the causal factor of violent behaviors. In fact, as game play increases violent behaviors decrease. Seann examines digital game design and teaching and learning. What can we learn from video games to provide a meaningful experience in classrooms? GAMERS REGULATE THE GAMING ENVIRONMENT. Seann shares that this happens in digital spaces where people gather to do fun things and the human nature is to produce systems within the social group to manage abhorrent behavior of individuals. Dr. Dikkers adds that there are websites, such as Common Sense Media, that adults can access to obtain reviews of games. TEACHING ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING & PARENTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE. Seann shares that many games are about ethical decision-making and each decision has an impact on the overall storyline. This is common among role playing games and those are actually the games that Dr. Dikkers enjoy playing side-by-side with his children so the video game is a medium for a social relationship and discussions about choices and consequences. HOW DO SCHOOLS ADOPT GAMES? Dr. Dikkers indicated that this question is the center of current research in gaming in educational setting. Teachers are learning digital literacy. To facilitate expansion of teachers’ gaming knowledge base, he urges educators to watch how games are designed, such as World of Warcraft, to look at what roles students are given and what missions they are given. Lesson plans could follow how game designers capture the attention of children and then build the child’s skills. Seann shared that schools are able to set up intra-district servers to house games in order to allow students to game with each other, but not with the entire outside world. He re-iterates that Minecraft is a very popular game to use in schools and can be the medium by which to foster curriculum about math, reading, science, problem solving, etc. MINECRAFT FOR EVERY STUDENT. Dr. Dikkers talks of working with schools that now have Minecraft video game accounts for all students. He notes a public school in Oregon, Wisconsin that focused on teachers learning technology and designing lesson plans integrated with technology. FOLLOW DR. PERRODIN. • Time To Expel Suspensions! Unpacking The School Discipline Debacle

Student suspension rates continue to drop across the United States. However, are we observing a genuine decline or the engineered result of creative new categorizing exempt from state and federal reporting? CANDID TRUTH. Dr. Perrodin cautions listeners that, “I am going to be direct and very blunt with you from an insider perspective telling you what is happening with school suspensions and some of you frankly are not going to like what I have to say…” Wow – unleashed. From his experiences as a school administrator, doctoral researcher, industry consultant and school safety expert witness, Dr. Perrodin crafts an argument that school suspension data is grossly flawed and impractical as a metric for school improvement. DECADES OF FLAWED DATA. School safety expert Kenneth Trump testified to Congress multiple times over the past 20 years about the serious, chronic inaccuracies in school safety data. Dr. Perrodin offers an example to support Mr. Trump’s claims by citing a Wisconsin high school of 800 students that reported a total of 4 school suspensions for an entire school year after reporting 71 suspensions the previous year (and shares the data screenshot in the YouTube version of the show). How is such an astounding figure achieved? At best, it was a mistaken entry that evaded data scrubbers with as much ease as stepping over a crack in a sidewalk. Yet, the situation is probably much darker and intentional than mere sloppy digit entry. In fact, the overall decreasing trend in school suspensions is not a representation that student behavior is correspondingly improving! WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH STUDENTS’ BEHAVIOR? Suspensions have been replaced by abeyance agreements and pre-expulsion agreements. Such measures, often thick with “legalese” and the coercive positionality of district’s brass and legal counsel, are basically “suspended” sentences that operate in a matrix where the benevolent-appearing school holds massive power over the parent and student to “go along with the deal or gamble the creaky plank of expulsion.” It’s a camouflaged suspension. WHAT HAS CAUSED SCHOOLS TO NO LONGER SUSPEND STUDENTS? It’s simple. First, suspensions have never been a quality tool to improve student behavior. Teach the student a lesson instead of teaching the student the lesson. And, the suspension is a reprieve for the school from the student. Remember, I said I was going to candid. Also, suspension data is a dark cloud – it’s a black mark on the school. In an era of free-agency for students, a district with low suspension numbers is more appealing than a district with high(er) suspension numbers. Lose kids and lose funding. Schools are being identified for disproportionate suspensions of youth per a specific race – and a “fix” to such a problem is to not produce a reportable suspension. See where I’m going – it’s not a fix, its re-badging terms and allowing persistent achievement gaps between students of different races. FOLLOW DR. • Examining The Patriot Act, Privacy, Freedom, And Safety - Interview With Dylan Allman

Dylan Allman is a rising political scholar alarmed by the growth of government and its invasion into personal privacy as protected by the 4th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. POLAR POSITIONS REGARDING THE PATRIOT ACT. During this riveting interview, Mr. Allman challenges the tenets of the Patriot Act, something that host Dr. Perrodin has openly supported for its assumed function of removing barriers to the exchange of threat leakage information between law enforcement agencies. Dr. Perrodin also believes that government surveillance thwarts countless threats aimed at the American people – things we never read or hear about due to the classified nature of such operations. Yet, Dr. Perrodin admits that his belief is perhaps a reality created by his own positionality and that such covert operations will never, by function, be transparent to the populace. BE SKEPTICAL. Mr. Allman introduces deeper skepticism to the conversation, implying that Dr. Perrodin seek to better inform his position about the value that the NSA, and like, organizations that might not authentically contribute to safety. Both Mr. Allman and Dr. Perrodin find themselves questioning the purpose of the Patriot Act as peaceful protests, from streets to college campuses, are rapidly eroding into riots between persons subscribed to “The Left” or “The Right” – a pattern that seemingly would be suppressed by the knowledge skimmed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and other covert government organizations purposed with identifying and stopping terrorism. MASS MEDIA DELIBERATELY AROUSING PUBLIC FEAR? Has the mass media purposely saturated Americans with feelings of fear and insecurity and have we become so distanced from the constructs of the Founding Fathers that the Constitution has taken a backseat to Executive Orders? PERSONAL SAFETY. Ultimately, this earnest discussion positions personal safety in the capable hands of the people and beckons all listeners to not only preserve the remnants of their rights, but to restore the rights granted to the states, localities and citizens by the Founding Fathers. NON-AGGRESSION. Both men embrace the non-aggression principle and liberty via the ballot and not the bullet. • A Blind Man's Amazing Stories About Personal Safety - Interview With David Hyde

When David Hyde was a boy, his mother stuffed a sock to shape it into a ball and then set him forth to play and learn with his sighted peers. BEING BLIND and BEING SAFE. David explains the concept of “talking signposts” and how they are used to orient and direct people that are blind as they travel through a busy location, such as the lobby of a convention center. Curiously, such approaches are rarely considered during crisis situations, like evacuating a burning building. In fact, the mere sound of alarms or horns can be disorienting, per David, as he interjected a casual apology to a friend that honked and waved at him several times in the past. STAY PUT, THERE’S A FIRE! Of the many engaging stories shared by David, his recollection of being told to harbor in a stairwell during a fire drill evacuation set the groundwork for an interview theme of a redundant the collective public’s under-estimating of the capabilities of a blind person - and yes, David began the interview by stating he was fully comfortable with being referred to as a “blind man” - as the disability was not a definition of him, but merely a description of a characteristic about him. GRANDPA’S REPLY. OK, David laughed at this story - so it’s OK to chuckle as all’s well that ends well. Working some years as a door-to-door insurance salesman, David points to the importance of portraying confidence and strategies he used to increase his personal safety in unfamiliar territory. Still, he borrows a story about a blind salesman that was exploited to humor others as he painstakingly awaited a potentially lucrative reply from the grand patriarch of a large family. WHY BLIND CHILDREN DON’T HAVE SEEING-EYE DOGS. No, it’s not due to funding, although a trained guide dog represents an investment of at least $30,000 ( not including food and care). David explains the reason to center on the need to first become proficient at white cane use and orientation and mobility. As he stated, a guide dog would not lead you through town to a convenience store - you just don’t follow it, you command it. ACCOMPLISHMENTS. As the poignant, often-humorous, stories map the intersections of blindness, safety and humanity, David’s words are threaded with introspection from a life of marked accomplishments, although humbly stated, such as creating statewide professional development programs from scratch or serving in essential roles on national organizations (not to mention the countless positive influences on colleagues and students). ASK, DON’T ASSUME. His parting advice for sighted people is to ask a blind person if he or she wants assistance in crossing a street or perhaps in some other situation. David is aware that people are expressing goodwill and are genuine in offers to help, but at the same time, he feels the stereotype of judged to be incapable because he has does not have sight. Nonetheless, David’s unlikely to turn down your offer to help him shovel his walkway following a robust Wisconsin snowstorm! This show is captivating and educational while also bringing to consideration one’s own beliefs and assumptions. • The One Sentence To ALWAYS Say To Someone In Crisis (And Why)

TEN WORDS: “You are experiencing a normal reaction to an abnormal event.” There it is – the one sentence that you compassionately say, perhaps over-and-over, to a person (or a group) manifesting stress characteristics (crying, trembling, withdrawn, etc.) following a crisis situation. Studies have shown that a concise post-incident debriefing offers substantial benefits to those involved in an “abnormal” high-stress event. Amazingly, simple validation of one’s feelings is a first, huge step in helping that person to return to a stable state of mind. SHAKE IT OFF: Despite the worn adage of “shake it off”, it is absolutely essential to skillfully deploy crisis debriefing steps to prevent stress disorders for persons responding to, or subjected to, traumatic stress events such as a vehicular accident, tornado, riot or an out-of-control adult or child. OUT-OF-CONTROL STUDENTS: David discusses an experience with an elementary school that was substantially disrupted by an aggressive boy that significantly damaged a classroom and was unwillingly removed from the school by multiple law enforcement officers, all while a guardian filmed the event and yelled, “This will be on the news!” Dr. Perrodin shares both how this incident was handled and how he believes it SHOULD have been handled by district officials. MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS ARE INCREASING: Student mental health needs are skyrocketing and acts of students literally destroying classrooms are common stories shared between educators. AND YET, CRISIS RESPONSE CARE FOR STAFF IS ALARMINGLY ABSENT IN SCHOOLS: Dr. Perrodin is a member of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department Critical Incident Debriefing Team and assists emergency responders to recognize, and process, the many variables of trauma related to crisis situations. He specializes in helping people bridge both psychological distress and moral distress. David explains that critical incident debriefing training is available, but seldom pursued, for K-12 settings increasingly bearing the brunt of violent behaviors from students or parents. From his unique perspective as a former school administrator, Dr. Perrodin compels school leaders to either develop internal formally-trained crisis incident debriefing teams or to access external professionals to help administer crisis intervention emotional “first aid” to lessen the probability of building principals, teachers, staff and students developing post-traumatic stress disorder or cumulative stress disorder – conditions that can greatly diminish quality of life and the effectiveness as an educator. Simply put, school staff are repeatedly traumatized on the worksite and complacent district office officials are not taking sufficient measures to preserve the mental well-being of employees (or students). • Avoiding Harsh Consequences Of Complacency In Known Environments

COMPLACENCY: It was Jean de La Fontaine that stated, “A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.” Dr. Perrodin describes a severe bicycle accident and reflects upon how his own complacency substantially contributed to painfully "meeting the road" on an otherwise perfect, uneventful August day. THINGS ARE ALWAYS CHANGING: One might think that a safety expert versed in awareness of context and situation would have a robust immunity to complacency – not so, in fact, the more familiar you are with something, the less you observe or question it. SCHOOL SAFETY COMPLACENCY: This is one of the reasons why school safety complacency is a well-documented problem with an elusive solution. Administrators, teachers and students simply “normalize” the school day as an "average-over-time" and even emotional events that change routines and focus safety responses, such as drills, tend to only produce a temporary heightened awareness that fades upon the passing of a few “typical” days of school. LULLED: David shares how complacency compromised his personal safety by lulling him into thinking that his skills were adequate for the situation – and that he would certainly recognize any changes to the well-known context and situation in plenty of time to make appropriate adjustments to avoid an accident. BE AWARE OF COMPLACENT OTHERS: And remember, David describes a situation in which he wasn’t processing the changed environmental cues. How aware are you of others that aren’t “paying attention”? RISKS: Even when you don’t overtly take risks you must remain cognizant that complacency is a risk.
