One aspect of San Diego that appeals not only to me, but to countless thousands who live, work and play in this city is our generally fantastic weather. As a coastal community, we’re been blessed with a confluence of sun, surf and shade that has attracted residents for generations.

The climate is changing though and not necessarily in a way that behooves human life on the planet. In San Diego, there are those who have made it their mission to stop climate change altogether. It isn’t a simple process, and it isn’t a process that I’m personally familiar with, so I sat down with Sophie Wolfram who is the Director of Programs at the Climate Action Campaign.

CAC, as it is known, endeavors to end climate change for good, and is responsible for San Diego’s groundbreaking Climate Action Plan that legally mandates the city to slash carbon emissions in half. San Diego is now the largest U.S. city with a commitment to 100% clean energy. The City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, with its commitments to social equity, jobs, and clean energy, has become a national model for climate action.

In my chat with Sophie we discuss some the objectives of the Climate Action Campaign, as well as where they’ve been successful and where they’re looking for more success along the way. We discuss exactly what a Climate Action Plan is and how vital they are in planning for the future.

On the latest episode of the Chronicles of San Diego Podcast, host Dike Anyiwo sits down with local journalist Jony Rico in the immediate aftermath of the court hearing in which lawyers for the plaintiffs Taylor and Dunbar argued in favor of removing the SDSU West ballot measure from the 2018 November election.

Jony and Dike recap the activities of the morning and analyze the comments made by both the plaintiffs and the defendant's lawyers as they each pled their cases for and against the potential removal of the SDSU West Initiative from the November election.

The San Diego Chronicle was conceived with two major goals in mind; to explore and explain San Diego with the content we create, and to inspire others to get involved with their own definition of community. The response so far has been really encouraging. 

The cast of Chronicle contributors continues to grow, and on the latest episode, we tried something different. A while back I met a gentleman by the name of Denzel Walkes at the first ever Crafting Community with Conversation event that I threw at Bay City Brewing back in November of 2017.

Denzel and I have kept in touch since then and when the Chronicle launched, he mentioned he was interested in getting involved. It took some time for us to sync up but when the trailers for the Crafting Community with Conversation video series started dropping, Denzel presented me with a pretty comprehensive plan for exactly how he wanted to contribute. 

Thus, this interview with Geneviéve Jones-Wright was conceived. I'd like to thank Denzel for stepping up and making this happen, as well as Geneviéve Jones-Wright herself for taking the time to chat just days before the primary election when her race will be decided. I’d like to extend a special thanks to Mary Latibashvili for setting the wheels in motion to get this interview done.

This is the district where I live so I was particularly keen to spend some time trying to understand where his head is when it comes to some of the issues that affect myself, my neighbors and this area at large.

The June primary is just a couple of weeks away and in this conversation we chat about the most crucial issues in San Diego and what Jordan would like to do were he to take office. We also touch on where Jordan stands with respect to SoccerCity vs SDSU West and what policies he would prioritize in the event he is successful in the June primary and ultimately the November general election.

On the latest Chronicles of San Diego Podcast, Dike Anyiwo recaps the week that was in San Diego, specifically with respect to the ongoing Mission Valley redevelopment process between SoccerCity and SDSU West.

This past week the City Attorney filed petitions with the Superior Court of San Diego calling for legal review of the two initiatives, and subsequently City Council member Scott Sherman called on the office of the City Attorney to draft the legally binding leases that whichever victorious initiative would have to abide by now as opposed to waiting after the election.

Dike also touches on the Midway Planning Group's monthly meeting and the lobbying that goes on even at that level, before winding down with an interview with TOPSoccer Director Christine Van Slyke.

It’s been a few weeks since we last spoke and for that I sincerely apologize. I assure you though that I’ve made up for my absence  with this episode. I sat down with a fellow named Bernie Schroeder who is the Director of Programs at San Diego State University’s Lavin Entrepreneurship Center.

I’ve known Bernie from arm’s length for a little over three years now and from the very first time I entered his presence I’ve felt the intensity of his intellect.

Bernie is one of the most accomplished people that I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with and in this episode, we learn all about his background as a professional and how he came into his role at SDSU, as well as the changes that he has witnessed first-hand as the university continues to grow in a modern society.

We also touch on the SDSU West proposal and how the feeling on campus has evolved from when SoccerCity first launched all the way through the present day.

Today I'm joined by a guy who goes by the name FreeMind619. His real name is Scott, but he insisted I save his contact as FreeMind619 so... I did.

I first came across FreeMind619 on Twitter a few months back when I was doing some research into San Diego's hip hop music community. It was shortly after I kicked off the Chronicle and I was curious about what kind of native sound San Diego had to offer.

After silently following on Twitter for a while, I finally was prompted to action when I took issue with a tweet of his that I disagreed with.

A few weeks later a story in the San Diego Reader that mentioned that same tweet I disagreed with caught the attention of a friend of mine who brought it to my attention.

That kicked off a conversation that culminated with me paying a visit to the home studio where Scott Manichanh aka FreeMind619 produces his craft.

We talk about both the creative and the business side of the local hip hop scene. We talk about the different neighborhoods and gang affiliations in San Diego. We talk about the unique pace that so many San Diegans seem to prefer to live life at and the philosophy that seems to drive the city.

This conversation is a lot different from any of the previous episodes, and please be warned that there is quite a bit of strong language that I decided not to edit out. On today’s episode I’m joined by recent retiree Hank Ramirez. We talk about his role as a community activist, his work with the County of San Diego, what it means to be a gay man in today’s world and what drives Hank to action now that he’s retired.

Hank provides some first-hand insight into how the County of San Diego responded to last summer’s Hepatitis A outbreak, and recounts his start as an activist with HIV/AIDS organizations here in town. We also spend some time talking about the major issues impacting San Diego today and what we can do in the present to affect the future we want to see.
