Lauren Dahl is the Programs and Operations Director at Green Door Folk School, a folk school based in northern Michigan focused on hands-on, community-centered learning. Folk schools began in Denmark in the mid-1800s, inspired by educator N. F. S. Grundtvig, who believed education should focus on personal growth, cultural identity, and civic engagement rather than exams or degrees. The movement spread across Europe and later to North America, where folk schools continue today as places for hands-on learning, traditional skills, and community connection. Green Door Folk School offers immersive classes in traditional crafts, folk skills, and creative practices, all designed to help people reconnect with the natural world, their own capabilities, and their community. Built on values of accessibility, sustainability, and lifelong learning, Green Door provides a space where education is experiential, collaborative, and grounded in both cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.
