Moms on helping their kids through the college admissions process:
Find a way to lessen your grip on the reins, even a little bit
Moms are flexible; give your kids the support they need when they need it
Listen to your kids to understand what they need
Advice for parents on navigating the admissions process:
Find a school where your child is happy, versus the major that maps to their desired career
Approach it like any other major financial decision; as parents, educate yourselves on your budget and financial constraints
Don’t drive yourself crazy (#dontdriveyourselfcrazy!)
Start as early as you can – know your checklist and anticipate opportunities to check off items
Who gave you support when your kids went through the admissions process?
Turn to older siblings whose kids have already experienced this process
Reach out to friends who do not live nearby (to avoid classmate comparisons)
People in the industry, especially online
How moms used online communities to create their resources:
Paying for College 101 – driven by a passion to get information to parents as soon as possible; now a resource for members to share with and support each other
Your Empty Nest Coach – aimed at helping moms stay focused and centered throughout the process
How do you handle the hard stuff with your kids?
Keep loving and supporting your kids through it all; be transparent about your own disappointments
Remind your kids it’s ok to feel disappointed
Don’t fight disappointment, just process through the emotions that come up
Describe your transition as a mom:
Newfound free time got channeled back into the business
Did more volunteering; spent more time with the kids still at home
Found more time for reading; spending time with a spouse; working more
Final thoughts:
Have fun with the process!
Take a deep breath and move on from where you are
Ask questions, use online resources
Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
