Here’s the second installment of our 2018 Holiday gift guide!
This episode features an interview with Paul Vasey, creator of CashCrunch Games. Vasey, a former teacher of Business Studies, set up an educational business with the mission of helping young people learn about and make sense of money.
CashCrunch Games are based on a straightforward philosophy: save first, spend later. Citing current statistics, Vasey mentions 78 percent of today’s households live paycheck-to-paycheck, and college graduates have amassed $1.5 Trillion in student debt. Vasey’s goal with CashCrunch Games is to teach the value of money, educate today’s youth, and turn the 78 percent from “have nots” into “haves.”
Several versions of CashCrunch are available:
* CashCrunch Junior: For ages 5-12, this 4-player board game is focused on saving first, spending later. The game facilitates conversations about money in a fun and engaging way.
* CashCrunch 101: For ages 13-21, this online game reflects the same philosophy as CashCrunch Junior, but players get rewarded for saving. Players get bank and credit card statements, credit scores, among others. The goal is to help young people more effectively navigate student life.
Paul’s bottom line messages are clear: In the end, don’t be afraid to have a conversation about money. And it’s never too early to build money skills.
ABOUT PAUL VASEY
Paul Vasey is the founder of CashCrunch Games. He holds a Business Education Degree from Nottingham Trent University. He had originally launched one game (Fortune and Venture – currently being revamped) but decided that his resources needed to be tailored to more personal instances.
A former teacher of Business Studies who left the UK and is now living in California. After teaching and talking about Business, it was time to leave the confines of the classroom and walk the walk. He wanted to put what he had learned from teaching students into practice to make a difference.
He noticed that a lot of students associate money with math and were naturally intimidated. He wants to change this. People deal with money all the time. The difference is simply the number of zeros after each number. People know the basics of add, subtract, multiply and divide. With these basics, he feels that people are more than armed to change the way money is viewed and used.
In his free time, he likes to spend time with his wife, walk, body board, swim, golf, drink coffee by the beach and come up with various concepts that could be turned into reality.
