The Federal Government’s decision to trial drug testing welfare recipients in Logan has come under fire.

The trial was supposed to start in January but was delayed due to a lack of support in the Senate.

Nick McGuire, the Acting Director of Community Services believes the drug trial won’t deal with the real issues, ‘This is a band-aid solution, it doesn’t get to the heart of the issue which is dealing with drug addicted people.’

Glynn Harnell is fighting for ‘negligence driving’ laws in Queensland after his daughter was killed by a ‘careless’ driver.

Families who have lost loved ones in traffic accidents are another step closer to a change in legislation with a powerful Queensland government committee recommending a new charge of negligent driving be introduced.

A negligence law would mean harsher penalties and possible criminal charges for offending drivers.

The careless driving law has a maximum jail-time of six months but rarely gets met.

Ben spoke with criminal lawyer, Bill Potts who says negligence charge won’t solve the problem, ‘We don’t make laws to make us feel good – we make them to make us do good.’

A beloved fishing store will continue their manufacturing business after they were almost forced to close their doors last year.

‘Alvey Reels’ originally announced the failure on Facebook, but that was until the post went viral.

Now, the business is booming and owner, Bruce Alvey, couldn’t be happier.

The State Government has been copping plenty of heat from the majority of the state’s sporting clubs over the costs of hiring Stadium Queensland.

In addition, a taskforce of industry and commercial experts will be set up to evaluate the management of State Government Venues.

Sports Minister, Mick de Brenni told Ben, ‘These venues are expensive to run, but we need to make sure that sport continues to be affordable so we can show off their expertise in these stadiums.’

The Palaszczuk Government has defended the growth in senior public servants claiming the increase was due to hiring frontline health workers including doctors.  

According to Public Service Workforce Data, in three years, the number of top level bureaucrats went from nearly 14,000 to 18,000; a 30 per cent increase.

Senior servants are those earning around $150,000 a year.

Queensland Opposition Leader, Deb Frecklington says the Labor government need to justify this increase.

With the average cost of petrol currently sitting well over $1.50, it’s no wonder so many are outraged with the 30-cent fluctuations week to week.

Sydney has tempered the sting of high petrol prices by introducing a number of independent stores.

But when are more independent stores coming to Brisbane?

Ben spoke with Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association CEO, Mark McKenzie who says that even though it would be great to have independent stores in Brisbane, the cost can be upwards of $6 million.
