When reporters asked Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowels if he gets along with other ‘black’ coaches there was a deep rooted racism that implied ‘blacks’ are different, in his words “odd,” or must all know each other. It would be like asking Andy Reid if he gets along well with other overweight coaches. The NFL already has a relatively proportionate number of black headaches, not to mention other members of coaching staffs, but that means little - and it doesn’t stop there. Now even the NHL is adopting the same narrative, with a recent report finding that most staff are white and about 38% of staff are women, which is equal to about the same percent of the population that enjoys hockey. This is supposed to imply racism or sexism but numbers from both leagues demonstrate the opposite of discrimination. Besides, hockey is a unique regional sport typically played by players with lighter skin as the NFL and NBA are made up of roughly 58% and 73% Black players. More ‘people or color’ are employed in playing professional sports by leagues, including the 83% non-white WNBA, than ‘whites’, and yet the narrative is focused on the skin color of coaches and other staff, or their genitals.
