Ahmed Aboul Gheit came to Casa Árabe’s headquarters to present the latest edition of his book, “Witness to War and Peace.”
At the event, held at our institution’s Auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62) on May 26, the utmost representative of the Arab League spoke about his experiences at crucial moments in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries within the unstable region of the Middle East. In this book, former Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit recounts his experience during the 1973 war, alongside National Security Advisor Mohamed Hafiz Ibrahim, a two-year period in which Egypt prepared for war with Israel. The author continues by providing an account of the war itself and then the negotiations which followed thereafter. In the second part of his book, Aboul Gheit narrates the inner workings of peacebuilding process with Israel through his experience as a member of a delegation in charge of monitoring the peace process as of 1977. In the pages of this book, readers will discover that small details often make it possible to understand and interpret events and situations of a great magnitude.
Aboul Gheit has held key positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt (2004-2011) and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1999-2004), as well as being a member of various diplomatic missions. He formed part of the negotiating team for the Camp David Accords in 1978, which culminated in the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, a milestone in regional diplomacy.
In his work at the head of the Arab League, he has advocated for greater involvement by the international community in conflict resolution, especially in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process through the reactivation of the peace process within the framework of the United Nations. His career has earned him international acknowledgment, thus strengthening his role as an advocate for dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for conflict resolution and the strengthening of cooperation in the Arab world.
