To start the 2019-2020 Academic Year, The Seneca Scene welcomed President Joyce P. Jacobsen to introduce them and discuss Hobart and William Smith Colleges as we begin the academic year. It is the first episode in this years’ series on the State of the Colleges. In the next few weeks we will also speak with William Smith Dean Lisa Kaenzig and Interim Hobart Dean Khuram Hussain. Wren Andrews introduces President Jacobsen providing a great get to know her. The two discuss the campus pulse from the Provost position and correlation to the Chief Office of Diversity and Inclusion position, student government meetings, sustainability and planning processes on campus.

This week on the Seneca Scene we have an in-depth conversation with David Kendrick an Associate Professor of Geoscience. Professor Kendrick passionately talks about how he fell in love with geoscience and their journey to become a part of the HWS Community. We also delve into his research with geology of the fingerlakes and how that impacts our world today. Professor Kendrick discusses his role in John Cariani’s Love/Sick  which was performed last semester and the plans for the new science buildings.

This week The Seneca Scene welcomes Professor of Biology Meghan Brown. Professor Brown is an aquatic ecologist that has done research in the finger lakes and all around the world including Italy, Guatemala, Australia, and Siberia. We have an interesting discussion about their work with invasive species in the finger lakes, the relationship with politics and science in the world, and climate change. Professor Brown also talks about her experiences teaching abroad at different lakes around the world.

Professor Talmage has a PhD in Community Resources and Development from Arizona State University and has a strong background in entrepreneurship. We discuss many topics including his journey to HWS, key skills that every entrepreneur need in order to succeed, and how the entrepreneurial studies minor can help you develop a mindset that will benefit you for the rest of your life. We also talk about all the resources that are available here at HWS including the Bozzuto Center, The Centennial Center, and market research.

Trisha discusses how her love of history, combined with her passion for learning, lead to her joining the HWS Archives. We also hear the story of how HWS came to be the home of a mummy and how the Archives records the history of the Colleges through a variety of resources. Finally, she talks about how the Archives and its team can be a great resource for students – as it was for our Tommy the Traveler team during their initial phase of research.

Steven is majoring in English and minoring in Africana Studies and is also in the Teacher Education Program. The Seneca Scene is off this week and, in preparation for the upcoming school year, we are revisiting the second-annual “Year in Review” episode with our guest Alex Kerai ’19. Alex will be discussing topics including the presidential search, the coordinate system, diversity and inclusion, student activism, and graduation. A member of the class of 2019, Alex graduated with honors in English. He is a double major in English and Media and Society, a double minor in Theater and Writing Colleagues, and is a Rhodes Scholar Finalist. He is one of the seven Druids and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In addition, he is a member of the sailing team; president of the Phoenix Players theatre group; a videographer, photographer, and writer at the Office of Communications; a Writing Fellow; and Editor-in-Chief of the Herald newspaper, as well as the founder of The Seneca Scene podcast, and the creator, producer and host for the Career Journeys podcast with Career Services.

The team at The Seneca Scene would like to congratulate Alex on his many accomplishments as well as his hard work and dedication to making this podcast a success. After completing the Tommy the Traveler miniseries in July, Alex officially finished work relating to The Seneca Scene; he will still host and produce Career Journeys for the next few months as they release new episodes. We know that he will continue to live a life of consequence.

The Seneca Scene is off for the next two week to prepare episodes for the fall. This week we are revisiting Zahra’s story which we first shared back in February.  For this episode we welcomed  Zahra Arabzada ’19 to tell her story of her life as a runner, starting in her home country of Afghanistan, and how her advocacy has impacted women in the United States as well as her home. Recounting her reasons for running in hijab in the U.S. and her work to advocate for female sports in Afghanistan. Zahra shares her incredible tale, proving that anyone can be a runner, no matter race, gender, or religious identity. Along the way, Zahra explains how growing up in Afghanistan shaped her desire to become a doctor and how running became a symbol of opportunity rather than just a part of survival.
