Kansas Early Learning Standards are aligned with the K-12 College and Career Ready Standards. 

The purpose of the Kansas Early Learning Standards:

*   To create a continuum that links early development to school readiness and later learning in school and life;

*   To provide a clear statement of what young children should know and be able to do as a result of experiencing quality early learning opportunities .

*   To provide guidance for early learning professionals that enhance and support their abilities to create experiences that promote early learning opportunities and sup- port families; and

*   To show that during the early years, children acquire skills, knowledge and abilities in all developmental areas (e .g ., social-emotional, physical, early literacy, mathematics, music) critical to future learning

Kalin Koehn’s past experience as a Speech-Language Therapist, and Head Start Director has enhanced her ability to successfully analyze programs and provide support in many early childhood areas including screenings, assessment, and curriculum implementation, as well as grant and budget development.

Most recently, she has been working as an independent consultant for Head Start programs in Kansas, providing mentoring and trainings for directors and management staff; she develops and conducts individualized trainings and workshops.  Trainings have focused on program implementation, data analysis, and enhancing classroom outcomes.   In an effort to target school readiness, she has mentored Head Start grantees in compiling and analyzing their CLASS and child outcomes data, which has lead to pinpointing areas of strength and need and to setting program wide goals.

As a contracted Office of Head Start Reviewer, Kalin has completed Office of Head Start Monitoring Reviews  within early education programs across the nation.   The review assignments require gathering program information, compiling the information and data found, and working with the teams to complete the protocol and write summary reports.

Tip:  White a question on a label and place it on the child for them to wear home.  This will spark a conversation about the subject just in case the child forgets to bring it up.  What a great way to reinforce something they just learned in class.

Young children are naturally curious and constantly exploring the world around them. Classroom science provides the opportunity for children to develop their natural curiosity and to start building theories.  Children can develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural world by the experiences they have in the classroom. Remember that early childhood science is– exploring materials/events, asking questions, investigating, recording/representing their work, reflecting on what they have done and what it means – allow them to create and develop new theories or ideas about how the world works.  Find what the children are interested in and begin your science project with something of their choosing.

Classroom tip:  Give each child a task that they are responsible to complete.

Carianne came to ESSDACK as an early childhood specialist in July of 2013. Her passions include early childhood topics, working with families in poverty, coaching, and literacy. She is also a certified MTSS math facilitator.

She began her career teaching reading in the primary grades. Later she began working with children with special needs in the preschool classroom. The majority of her career she has spent working at Head Start. Most recently she worked with teen parents and their babies in an Early Head Start Classroom.

Carianne is a Kansas State University graduate with a degree in elementary education. She later received an endorsement from McPherson College in early childhood special education.
