For two months, Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha methodically strangled the city with mines, artillery, and starvation while Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg held a collapsing defense together with dwindling men, food, and gunpowder.

Then, on September 12, King John III Sobieski led a coalition army over the wooded heights of Kahlenberg and launched the largest cavalry charge in recorded history.
