As I reflect on my encounters with racism I ask What is racism?

It’s a question I first asked at the age of 4.

A question that has followed me all my life.

From being left out of games in the playground,

to being stopped by police on my way home,

to being asked by a friend — at 60 —

“Why do you feel the need to write that book?”

My new poem, “What Is Racism?”, traces a lifetime of encounters with racism.

It doesn’t offer a single definition — instead, it tells the story of how our understanding grows, how silence often speaks louder than words, and how questions eventually become purpose.

I hope it resonates, provokes reflection, and invites conversation.

How do you explain racism?

It’s never just a dictionary definition or a single shocking event. Racism is a shadow that shifts with time and experience.

In my poem “What Is Racism?” I trace a lifetime of encounters — from a child asking “Why won’t they play with me?”to a mother warning “It’s not safe for you.” Even at 60, a friend still asked me:
“Have you ever experienced racism? Why do you feel the need to write that book?”

This journey reveals four truths we cannot ignore:

1️⃣ Racism isn’t a single event — it’s a lifelong accumulation. Small moments stack up, shaping identity and wellbeing.

2️⃣ The loudest response is often silence. Questions met with stares, deflection, or discomfort leave wounds that words never healed.

3️⃣ The focus shifts from “Why?” to “What now?” At 50, I stopped asking. I started naming. Teaching. Resisting. Purpose replaced questions.

4️⃣ The conversation is never truly over. Even after decades, explaining your truth is met with someone else’s need to protect their comfort.

💡 Racism is not simply defined — it is lived, endured, and transformed into purpose.

We often picture psychology as a force for healing and understanding. But behind the image of objectivity lies a more uncomfortable truth: the field was shaped by racism, silence, and complicity.

In this episode, Beyond the Therapist’s Couch, I explore four truths psychology must confront:

1️⃣ Its Founders Weren’t Heroes – Many were eugenicists who embedded racism into the profession’s foundations.2️⃣ Neutrality as Harm – Hiding behind “objectivity” allows silence and complacency in the face of injustice.3️⃣ The ‘Nice Professional’ Problem – When psychologists avoid rocking the boat, they collude with systems of exclusion.4️⃣ Healing Requires Justice – True well-being demands we address systemic inequities, not just teach individuals to cope.
