  • 12 Strong, Mark Nutsch Interview
12 Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers) is a 2018 American war drama film directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and written by Ted Tally and Peter Craig. The film is based on Doug Stanton's non-fiction book Horse Soldiers, which tells the story of CIA paramilitary officers and U.S. Special Forces, in addition to USAF Combat Controllers, sent to Afghanistan immediately after the September 11 attacks. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, Michael Peña, Navid Negahban, Trevante Rhodes, Geoff Stults, Thad Luckinbill, William Fichtner, and Rob Riggle. Principal photography began in January 2017 in New Mexico. The film was released in the United States on January 19, 2018, in standard and IMAX theaters. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the cast and action but criticized the by-the-numbers execution and lack of hindsight of the War in Afghanistan.
The harrowing story of the first U.S. special forces mission in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The following is the second part of an Army.mil exclusive three-part feature recounts the events of the Green Berets' first mission in Afghanistan, as they sought to destroy the Taliban regime and deny Al-Qaida sanctuary in that country. BOMB STRIKES One of the primary and most important functions of the Special Forces teams during the early days of Afghanistan operations was calling in air strikes, supported by combat controllers from Air Force Special Operations Command. The U.S. military had been bombing the Taliban for a couple of weeks, but in a land of caves and mountains and small villages, it was difficult to distinguish targets. To help level the field and give the resistance forces a chance, the U.S. had to get rid of those tanks, armored carriers and antiaircraft guns. Once they got on the ground, Soldiers identified enemy targets, and skilled Airmen called in those targets and quickly began picking off the Taliban and Al Qaeda. They also called for resupplies and humanitarian assistance drops. "The sole focus of that combat controller was to bring that air-to-ground interface, so to look for areas where we could establish an airhead, where we could land aircraft, where we could bring supplies where we could do airdrops," explained former combat controller and retired Chief Master Sgt. Calvin Markham, who received a Silver Star for the operation. "The other side of it was to bring that close air support expertise with our air traffic control background, having multiple stacks of aircraft … from fighters to bombers overhead," he said. "It annihilated the enemy," he continued, noting that the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom was the first time B52s had been used for close air support since the Vietnam War. "I think it really broke their will to fight. You kill 10, 15 enemy combatants on the battlefield at one time, I'm sure it's a devastating blow to them, but when you're talking about hundreds of enemy combatants losing their lives from one strike, it makes the other guys think about what they're doing and that maybe they should retreat." The success of the bomb strikes also encouraged other fighters, who were perhaps on the fence, to join the coalition. "We fought for about a month and a half to two months, constantly air attacks, air attacks, air attacks on all of the Taliban positions, until it got to a point where we moved forward and took their lines and they just kind of went back to the populace," said Master Sgt. Keith Gamble, then a weapons sergeant on ODA 585\. "Once we started dropping bombs on the enemy, their [civilians] whole attitude changed," Gamble added. "They were loving us. A lot of (sodas) came out. A lot of really good food came out. We were their heroes." AN ERRANT STRIKE There were tragedies as well as successes. Fowers' team had a communications sergeant shot in the neck as they tried to advance across a heavily defended bridge. Then, the next day, Dec. 5, came one of the worst tragedies in those first months. A new GPS system resulted in some confused coordinates and a huge bomb -- a joint direct attack munition -- dropped inside his ODA's perimeter, killing three Americans and perhaps a dozen Afghan soldiers, and wounding almost everyone, including Fowers. "I actually thought I had been hit with an RPG," he remembered. "I thought I had taken a direct round to the chest. I thought we were getting attacked. … I was thrown probably a good five or six feet and I think I went unconscious for a little bit. When I came to, the Afghans that had been perching near us had been killed. I remember crawling over and grabbing one of their AKs and going over by our little mortar pit. I remember just waiting for the advancing threat I thought was coming up over the hill." Fowers and his team were eventually medically evacuated out of Afghanistan. (Operation Enduring Freedom was in its infancy and evacuation processes and local medical facilities had not yet been established.) He has received multiple Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart throughout his career. Maj. Mark Nutsch's deployment lasted about three months and earned him a Bronze Star with valor, while Gamble was in country until the end of January. He was seriously wounded on a subsequent deployment to Iraq, and retired after a long career with multiple awards, including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Like Markham, who has lost count of his deployments, all of the men have deployed multiple times. Nutsch has even returned to Afghanistan on charitable humanitarian missions. NEW YORK Today, a 16-foot, bronze statue of an Special Forces Soldier on horseback, named De Oppresso Liber -- the Special Forces motto, "to free the oppressed" -- or the Horse Soldier, stands near Ground Zero in New York, watching over the 9-11 memorial and honoring those first special operations teams. "Every time I go and look at it, it's pretty powerful," said Gamble. "It shows the bond between us and the first responders, the guys here in New York who went into Ground Zero, who rushed into the buildings to save as many people as they could, and then us, once we got the call, we were in Afghanistan taking care of the people who frigging decided to have this act of terror against us on our ground. "Every time I see it, I get goose bumps, seeing the stuff we did over there, the good things we did, the response America had to what happened to us."

  • Neal Schon of Journey Interview
JOURNEY is one of the most popular American rock bands of all time, creating some of the best-known songs in modern music. They have continued to tour and record into the 21st century, firing on all cylinders and making sure their fans will never stop believin'. Since the group's formation in 1973, the band has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 Gold and Platinum albums. The Greatest Hits album is certified 15 times-Platinum, bringing Journey into the elite club of Diamond-certified holders. Co-founder Neal Schon (lead guitarist) and original member Ross Valory (bass), and longtime members Jonathan Cain (keyboardist) and Arnel Pineda (lead singer) welcomed virtuoso drummer Steve Smith back into JOURNEY for the "San Francisco Fest 2016" tour, with The Doobie Brothers and Dave Mason, marking the first time Smith toured with the band since 1998\. With JOURNEY, Smith toured around the world and recorded numerous successful albums including the immensely popular Escape and Frontiers, both of which garnered the band many Top 40 hits. In 1985 Smith left Journey to pursue his original passion, jazz, and to continue his developing career as a session player, and rejoined the band in 1996 to record the reunion album Trial By Fire. Schon, Valory and Cain have always remained close friends with Smith, who has lent his incredible talent to several of Schon's solo albums, including critically acclaimed The Calling, and this year's Vortex, as well as Cain's 1997 Body Language. They were thrilled when Smith accepted their invitation to rejoin JOURNEY. JOURNEY's rock 'n' roll saga started more than 35 years ago in the San Francisco Bay Area. Neal Schon's musical career began at the age of 15, when he debuted with Santana as a guitar prodigy on the No. 1 album, Santana III. Ross Valory has been a grounding force in JOURNEY since the band's formation (other than a brief hiatus in the late 80's and early 90's) and Jonathan Cain was brought on board in 1980, rounding out the songwriting genius behind the defining album, Escape. Since Arnel Pineda joined JOURNEY as its new lead singer in 2007, the band has released two albums and embarked on seven major tours, performing on four continents for more than five million fans. Columbia Records signed the group in 1974 and each of the band's first three albums-Journey (1975), Look Into the Future (1976) and Next (1977)-charted higher than the previous release. The band embarked on a grueling touring schedule, staying on the road nine months per year performing music that Schon has referred to as "a rock 'n' roll version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra." Infinity, the group's fourth album, produced by Roy Thomas Baker (Rolling Stones, Queen, The Cars), immediately went Platinum after its April 1978 release and remained on the charts for more than two years. In 1978, Steve Smith was brought into the fold, adding his expert jazz-fusion chops to the band's signature sound for 1979's Evolution, their second platinum album. In October of that year, JOURNEY scored their first Top 30 single with "Lovin, Touchin', Squeezin'." Keeping up a prolific output in the studio and on the road, the band waited less than a year to release Departure, which reached #8 on the Billboard album chart and boasted the lead single "Any Way You Want It." A subsequent live double album, Captured, became their fourth consecutive platinum disc. 1981's Escape was the band's first #1 album and spent more than a year in the Top 40, eventually becoming certified eight times Platinum. That album produced three Top 10 hits that have become amongst the best-known songs in Journey's repertoire: "Don't Stop Believin'," "Who's Crying Now" and "Open Arms." In 1983, Frontiers reached #2 on the Billboard album chart, held back from the top spot only by Michael Jackson's Thriller. Between 1983 and 1986 the band landed seven Top 20 hits, including "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Girl Can't Help It" and "Only the Young," their song for the film Vision Quest. During the 1980s, JOURNEY had become bonafide superstars, filling stadiums across North America, and, despite several lineup changes, continued to record and tour. In 2005, JOURNEY received a star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, bringing together members of the band, including former frontmen Steve Perry and Steve Augeri. That evening's celebration concert at the House of Blues featured former vocalist Robert Fleishman, singing with Journey for the first time since 1977, as well as former drummers Aynsley Dunbar, and Steve Smith. In 2007, Neal Schon discovered Arnel Pineda in a YouTube video of Pineda singing with Filipino cover band, The Zoo. Pineda's tone, power and ability to sing a wide variety of material, including Journey classics, impressed Schon. After watching all the videos he could find with Pineda, Neal made an excited midnight phone call to share the news with bandmate Cain. Soon thereafter, Schon personally contacted Pineda, who initially thought it was a prank and didn't believe that he was talking to a founding member of one of the biggest bands in rock history. Six weeks later, Pineda arrived in San Francisco to audition and, within a few songs, had secured the job. JOURNEY officially introduced Pineda to the world as their new singer with the release of their 14th studio album, Revelation, which marked the band's biggest first-week sales in more than a decade, debuting at #5 on the Billboard 200 in June 2008, taking the top spot on the Independent Albums chart, and earned the band their 11th Platinum album. Journey toured the world for two years in support of Revelation, with more than a million fans attending the shows. In 2010, VH1 named the group one of the top 100 artists of all time. The group's success with Pineda led to another album of new material, Eclipse. Produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Rush) and co-produced by Schon and Cain, the album featured Pineda's songwriting contribution for the first time, solidifying the strong chemistry amongst the band members. The 2011 "Eclipse World Tour" again was attended by a million fans and ranked in the Top 15 Tours of the year. JOURNEY was awarded the prestigious "Legend of Live Award" at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards in honor of the band's significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and in acknowledgement of their commitment to the fans and the art of performing live. 2011 also marked the 30th anniversary of Journey's seminal anthem "Don't Stop Believin'." The song is the #1 digital catalog song in history, with sales of almost six million in the U.S alone. It was memorably used in the electrifying final scene of HBO's The Sopranos series finale. The song reached another level of stratospheric success when it was covered by the cast of FOX's wildly successful series Glee and became the best-selling song from the show. Three decades after its original release, "Don't Stop Believin'" has reached a new class of young fans to become a huge anthem for a whole new generation. The legendary band toured across North America in 2012 and then rounded off the year with three sold-out concerts at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. JOURNEY kicked off 2013 with a Super Bowl XLVII CMT CROSSROADS concert with country stars Rascal Flatts. The Crossroads concert marked the second Super Bowl appearance for Journey (they performed in 2009 at the NFL Tailgate Party before Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida) and the second collaboration for Journey and Rascal Flatts (in June 2012, Flatts and Journey closed the CMT Music Awards with a rousing performance of the megahit, Don't Stop Believin'). Fan demand was so high following the CMT Crossroads concert broadcast that JOURNEY and Rascal Flatts performed two concerts together later that year. In February and March of 2013, Journey toured Australia for the first time in the group's history, followed by a tour of Japan and a first-ever performance in Singapore, and then went to the UK in May for a critically acclaimed tour. JOURNEY toured North America in 2014 with the Steve Miller Band and special guest Tower of Power. The debut "San Francisco Fest" tour was ranked in the Top 20 of the year's highest-grossing tours. 2015 was a year of firsts for JOURNEY - a three week, sold-out residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, followed by performing with a full orchestra for the grand opening of the 2015 Hollywood Bowl season, performing a sold-out show with famed drummer Omar Hakim in the band's fold. The group then spent the summer touring all of Canada, performing in seventeen different markets, including many the band had never-before toured. JOURNEY launched "San Francisco Fest 2016" tour on May 12, 2016, at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, California. The tour again brought together two of the iconic groups that helped define the "San Francisco Sound" and ran through the summer. Added to the Bay Area-laden lineup for the special finale show on September 4 at San Francisco's AT&T Park, was the Steve Miller Band and Tower of Power. The concert was nicknamed "…On the Green" a tribute to legendary promoter Bill Graham's "Day on the Green" concerts, which Journey had performed on. In 2017 touring didn't slow down. The band joined up with SANTANA for several special concerts - New York City at Madison Square Garden, Uncasville, Connecticut, Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Inglewood, CA's Fabulous Forum. Journey also toured Southeast Asia - including debut shows in Seoul, South Korea, Taipei, Taiwan and Singapore. A short North American tour followed, with special guests ASIA, and by overwhelming demand, a second three-week residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The tour culminated with two wildy successful stadium shows, "Classic West" and "Classic East", alongside the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Earth, Wind & Fire and Steely Dan. 2018 sees Journey heading out on an 8-month, 60-date co-headlining tour with Def Leppard, starting on May 21 in Hartford, CT and ending in Los Angeles, CA on October 6 at the "Fabulous" Forum. Promising to be 2018's Tour of the Year, the two bands who last toured together twelve years ago, will both be performing full sets. The tour will stop at major arenas in the U.S and Canada, and make special stops at ten stadiums, including Boston's Fenway Park and Chicago's Wrigley Field.

  • ClusterTruck Interview
ClusterTruck is rolling into Kansas City with 11 virtual food trucks. That's right, virtual food trucks. The Indianapolis-based food delivery company that launched in 2015 offers more than 100 menu items, which are cooked in a kitchen designed for delivery. Its backbone is software that allows it to know when a driver has accepted an order, which cues food prep to begin. It seamlessly handles group orders with disparate items because its kitchen is organized by stations. So if a group order comes in for a burger, salad and pad Thai, the salad maker will be notified last, because it's the fastest to make. The process is designed to ensure that food won't arrive soggy or cold, and it will never sit under a heat lamp. "Having come from a deep technology background, we approached the growing problem of unsatisfied food delivery customers from a software perspective," ClusterTruck Inc. CEO Chris Baggott, who co-founded tech giants ExactTarget and Compendium Software, said in a release. "We believe hungry people should never have to choose between the convenience of fast delivery, the food quality they'd get at a sit-down restaurant and the personality of street food, so we created a service that offers all of the above." Here's a look at ClusterTruck's operations in Columbus, Ohio, just before it opened in October: clustertruck set to open in Columbus on Thursday. h Indianapolis-based food delivery company Clustertruck is launching in Columbus on Thursday. It operates in a 2,000-square-foot kitchen downtown at Long Street and Grant Avenue, where its team will cook up more than 100 menu items daily. To place an order, customers can visit ClusterTruck's website or use its app, which also shows the delivery progress. There's no delivery fee, but customers are required to meet the delivery driver at the curb. The average order takes 21 minutes from order to curbside pickup. ClusterTruck is NOW in Kansas City! It also operates in Bloomington, Ind.; Cleveland; Columbus; Denver; and Indianapolis.

  • Foreigner's Mick Jones Interview
The architect behind Foreigner’s extraordinary catalogue of smash hits, Mick has crafted some of rock music’s most enduring songs and produced 10 multi-platinum albums. Grammy and Golden Globe nominated songwriter, performer and producer and winner of the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriter award in Britain in 1998, Mick first began playing guitar in his early teens. "I knew early on that I could never hold a regular job. I had to play guitar. I had to somehow make my way into music" he says. After starting his own Blues/Rock band and opening for the Rolling Stones in pubs across South London, Mick’s first big break came in 1964 when he moved to Paris and was hired to play with French singer Sylvie Vartan and later hired to work as musical director for French rock icon, Johnny Hallyday. Jones returned to his native England in the early 70’s to reform the band Spooky Tooth with Gary Wright. After Spooky Tooth broke up, Mick moved to New York City and, in 1976, formed Foreigner with fellow Brits Ian Mc Donald and Dennis Elliott, and Americans Lou Gramm, Alan Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi. In his own words: "My initial musical vision for Foreigner was to combine Blues and R&B with British Rock and make it sound soulful and authentic. I?d grown up in England and had the English influence but I was also inspired by many elements of American music, from Mississippi Blues to Country and Western. Foreigner was the vehicle to get that musical blend across." "I’m grateful to be surrounded by the talented musicians that make up Foreigner today. Now each night on stage brings Foreigner’s music alive with energy and excitement. Thanks guys for making it all new again!" Quotes from Mick talking about Foreigner and the new "Feels Like The First Time" 3-Disc Album: "When doing the ‘Hot Blooded’ solo I did my damnedest to set the amp on fire, which is what originally happened," Mick says laughing, "I turned it up to 11, I kicked it. . . " "My feeling over the years is that if you can write a song on an acoustic instrument, and it sounds good, you know you have a good song," Mick explains. "The first time we approached these songs this way I was flabbergasted about how well they adapted back to their nucleus. It’s been an eye opener how stripping the songs bare brings fresh meaning and emotion out of them. The reaction has been so strong that it made me rethink the whole thing and put more attention to the unplugged show. People feel the intimacy, I talk about the songs and how they came about." "Its' been 6 years since the new line-up has been in place. The success, for me, merited giving the public studio recordings of songs by the new band," Mick Jones asserts. "People know the new Foreigner, so the Foreigner they see live is the same Foreigner they can get on record."
