We’re putting the party in watch party with a full schedule of FREE nighttime entertainment in the middle of the day including a live tribute to PINK FLOYD’S DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The last time Kansas City saw a total solar eclipse was 1806, and the next time will be 2205.

On August 21, everyone at City Market will be in the path of totality to witness this extraordinary and rare phenomenon. The eclipse begins just after 11:30 a.m. and will move into total eclipse at 1:08 p.m. City Market is showcasing the entire span of the eclipse with FUN, FREE, FANTASTIC performances and educational activities while we wait watch and experience this incredible event as a community.

WDAF FOX4 Meteorologist Joe Lauria will serve as Master of Ceremonies along with eclipse experts, Science City’s Patrick Hess and retired geophysicist Laura Tyson.

Though the Dwight Twilley Band only had one hit (Twilley had another on his own), Twilley and partner Phil Seymour created an enduring and highly memorable brand of power pop that blended Beatlesque pop and Sun rockabilly “slapback” echo. Only a fraction of the band’s early output was made available at the time, but these records are highly revered by power pop aficionados.

According to the legend, Dwight Twilley met Phil Seymour in 1967 at a theater where they had gone to see the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.” After the film they immediately went to Twilley’s house to start writing and recording. The two continued the partnership over the next several years, calling themselves Oister and recruiting another part-time member, Bill Pitcock IV, on lead guitar. After developing their sound in their homemade studio, “the Shop,” they decided to take a stab at professional recording and headed out to Nashville, though they ended up stopping first at the legendary Sun Studios. Jerry Phillips (Sam’s son) was impressed enough to team them up with former Sun artist Ray Harris, who introduced them to “the Sun sound,” roughing up their Beatles-obsessed style a bit and creating a unique and endearing sound.

The two signed to Shelter Records in 1974. Their first single, “I’m on Fire,” became a national hit in 1975, peaking at number 16, with relatively no promotion. During an appearance on American Bandstand, the band previewed what was to be the follow-up single, “Shark,” an equally infectious, hit-worthy rocker. The success of the film “Jaws” caused the label to reject the single, however, to keep them from becoming perceived as a cash-in novelty act. This was just the beginning of bad luck that would plague the group from that point on. Their follow-up single and completed album went unreleased for 18 months due to label problems, and a second album recorded in England was left unreleased altogether, creating a myth around the band in some circles while the general public quickly lost interest. The belated follow-up single, “You Were So Warm,” ended up failing due to distribution problems. Predictably, when the album “Sincerely” was finally released, it failed as well. Seymour and Twilley befriended the like-minded Tom Petty and contributed backing vocals on several tracks. Petty repaid the favor for their second album, “Twilley Don’t Mind,” for Arista in 1977. Despite the once again unquestionably high quality of songs, the album stiffed as well. Seymour left the band the following year, pursuing a brief solo career before lymphoma cut his life short in 1993.

Twilley carried on as a solo act, releasing “Twilley” for Arista in 1979 and “Scuba Divers” for EMI America in 1982, and found success again with “Jungle” in 1984, when he scored his second hit with “Girls.” His album “Wild Dogs” went unnoticed on its 1986 release by CBS Associated Records. In addition, Twilley recorded an album in 1980, “Blueprint,” that remains unreleased and contributed one track to the 1992 “Wayne’s World” soundtrack, “Why You Want to Break My Heart.” In 1993, DCC released “The Great Lost Twilley Album,” which collected a fraction of the “hundreds” of unreleased songs Twilley and Seymour recorded in the early, ill-fated days. Two newly recorded songs appeared on the best-of collection “XXI” in 1996, and in 1999, Twilley released both another rarities collection, “Between the Cracks, Vol. 1” (Not Lame Archives), and his first new album in 13 years, “Tulsa” (Copper). In 2001, Twilley released “The Luck” (Big Oak), an album he had actually completed in 1994. The seasonal EP “Have a Twilley Christmas” (DMI) appeared in 2004, followed by Twilley’s ninth studio album, “47 Moons,” in 2005.

In 2007 he signed to Gigatone Records and a deluge of Twilley releases followed, including reissues of “Tulsa” and “47 Moons” (with bonus tracks), seven volumes of “Rarities” discs, and a compilation of tracks recorded after Twilley left CBS, Northridge to Tulsa. In 2009 he released an album of Beatles covers titled simply “The Beatles” and followed it with an album of originals in 2010 titled “Green Blimp.” After Twilley moved to the Varèse Sarabande label, his 11th album, “Soundtrack,” was issued in late 2011. In the summer 2013 his song “Lookin’ For the Magic” was prominently featured in the horror film “You’re Next” – a major motion picture.

There are few artists whose names are synonymous with one instrument and how it's played in service to an entire genre.

Utter the phrase "young blues rock guitarist" within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has sold millions of albums while throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens.

In a 20-year recording career that began when he was just 16, Shepherd has established himself as an immensely popular recording artist, a consistently in-demand live act and an influential force in a worldwide resurgence of interest in the blues.

From television performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (amongst others) to features in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Maxim Magazine, Blender, Spin, USA Today and more, his musical career has been nothing short of phenomenal.

At 16 years old, he signed his first record deal and burst onto the national scene with the release of his 1995 debut album Ledbetter Heights, which produced the radio hits "Deja Voodoo," "Born with a Broken Heart" and "Shame, Shame, Shame." His relentless touring and success on rock radio helped to drive the album to Platinum sales status. His 1998 sophomore effort Trouble Is… also went Platinum, yielding such radio hits as "Blue on Black," "True Lies" and "Somehow, Somewhere, Someway." 1999's Live On spawned the radio hits "In 2 Deep", "Shotgun Blues" and "Last Goodbye."

2004's The Place You're In was a blistering rock record and was followed up by 2007's ambitious 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads, for which Shepherd and his band traveled throughout the American South to record with such vintage blues greats as B.B. King, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins and David "Honeyboy" Edwards on their home turf. 2010 saw the release of Shepherd's long-awaited first live album, Live! In Chicago, recorded at Chicago's House of Blues during the all-star Legends tour and featuring guest appearances by such blues legends as Hubert Sumlin and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. The live disc debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues chart, as did 2011's How I Go. In 2013, Shepherd further expanded his musical horizons by teaming with veteran rockers Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg to form THE RIDES, whose first album Can't Get Enough helped to expand Shepherd's audience as well as his musical resume. 2014 saw the release of Goin’ Home, Shepherd’s sixth # 1 debut on the Billboard Blues charts. Goin’ Home features several talented friends who shared Shepherd's enthusiasm for the project's back-to-basics ethos. Those guests include fellow guitar icons Joe Walsh, Warren Haynes, Keb' Mo' and Robert Randolph, longtime friend Ringo Starr, Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, the Rebirth Brass Band and co-producer Blade's father, Pastor Brady Blade Sr., who lends a bracing dose of preaching to Shepherd's version of Bo Diddley's’ "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover." In the months since its release, Shepherd and his band have toured the world extensively blazing a fresh trail for the historical American art form in the 21st Century.

At Foreigner’s core is the founder and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Mick Jones, the visionary maestro whose stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents continue to escalate Foreigner’s influence and guide the band to new horizons. He reformed the band after a 2002 hiatus and selected lead singer Kelly Hansen to help write an inspired new chapter in the history of Foreigner. One of rock’s greatest showmen, Hansen is known for his innate ability to connect with the crowds. As a front man and lead vocalist, Hansen is among the most respected, consummate professionals in rock and roll. Mick also brought in bassist Jeff Pilson, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel, guitarist Bruce Watson, Michael Bluestein on keyboards, and Chris Frazier on drums. An unprecedented new level of energy lead the group to a re-emergence of astounding music that speaks to long time Foreigner fans and younger generations. With renewed vitality and direction, Foreigner hit the Billboard charts again with the 2005 release of their live greatest hits album, Extended Versions. Cancer is not a one-day thing. It is hard to imagine what life is like to have a child going through cancer; it affects the whole family. That's why our programs are so important. We do not limit requests from families, nor discriminate on socioeconomic status. When cancer enters life, the simple, everyday things aren’t so simple anymore.

Singer, songwriter and 38 Special front man Don Barnes cut an album for A&M Records almost 30 years ago during a five-year hiatus from the band he co-founded and continues to lead. Keenly aware of the "lost" album for years, Andrew McNeice at MelodicRock Records began talks with Barnes last year about bringing the music to a deserving public. Ride The Storm is now set for release on June 30, 2017.

"After years of success with 38 Special, I was given an opportunity by A&M Records to create a side project as a solo artist," said Barnes. "I began co-writing with the masterful songwriter and artist, Martin Briley, and when it came time to get into the studio, I was honored to have some of the industry's top musicians on the recording. Just as it was ready to be released, A&M Records was sold through a huge global acquisition and the company changed hands several times. My project was put aside without a release date, but I'm proud to finally present my solo album with some special extras included."

In searching for the original masters for Ride The Storm, Don found the only existing copy of a 'rock mix' that was commissioned in 1989 to take a look at how the songs would sound, remixed for a bigger 'rock' impact using today's technology. MelodicRock insisted both the original and updated mixes of the classic album be included in the release - as well as three individual, heavily traded, solo demo tracks that were not included on the original album's playlist.

The original tracks were cut by some of the most sought after musicians on the rock scene including Dann Huff, now an award-winning producer for the likes of Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and others; piano/keyboard whiz Alan Pasqua; the late great Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro and his late brother Mike, who also played bass for Toto; Sammy Hagar's keyboard player Jesse Harms; and former Heart drummer Denny Carmassi.

"In addition to these great players, I was privileged to work and collaborate with two very talented producers - Martin Briley and

Brian Foraker - both of whom brought a wealth of experience and cool vibe to our sessions," added Barnes. "We had always felt that the combination of these powerhouse players together created a very special album, a unique 'rock classic.' Many who have heard the album say that description still remains true today."

The complete Ride The Storm release includes two CDs

featuring the album in its original intended form, plus the second 'alternate mix' disc, on which the three additional bonus tracks are added at the end. No artwork was conceived for the original album, so Barnes collaborated with artist extraordinaire Nello

…His mother, a restaurant manager, familiarized him with the daily grind of the kitchen — from peeling potatoes and shrimp to cleaning bathrooms and washing dishes — as the family moved from town to town after Michael’s birth in Gettysburg, South Dakota. After earning a degree in Psychology at the University of Southern Colorado, Michael began work at Chateau Pyrenees, a French restaurant in Denver, where he studied under Jean-Pierre Lelievre and, later Georges Mavrothalassitis. In 1985, he traveled to the South of France to cook and while in Nice and Cassis he discovered the traditional European approach of artisinal products made from the freshest local ingredients. Fueled by this resonating impression, Michael returned to Chicago in 1987 to work as Sous Chef at Charlie Trotter’s. Not satisfied with his European training, he returned to Nice, France in 1989 to be the Executive Chef at L’Albion. Upon his return to Chicago in 1991, he worked as Co-Chef at Carlos’ in Highland Park and then Executive Chef at Gordon until 1994.

In 1994 Michael was recruited to be Executive Chef and Corporate Chef for Kansas City’s The American Restaurant. Beginning there in 1994, Michael quickly breathed new life into both the menu and the image of the 25-year-old restaurant, which had suffered in the past from an intimidating and pretentious image. His fresh, simple, unfussy American fare, supported by the foundation of his extensive French training, won the trust and loyalty of local diners. In 1999 Michael won the James Beard Award for “Best Chef in the Midwest” a first for him and for Kansas City.

In June of 2002 Michael Smith co-founded the award winning bistro, Forty Sardines in Leawood, Kansas which was nominated for a James Beard Award for “best new restaurant” and won the James Beard Award for “best restaurant graphics” in 2002. Michael is also the owner of Tapas restaurant, Extra Virgin, and is a consultant in the highly successful fast casual concept, SPIN Pizza in Leawood, Kansas.

As an active member of the culinary community, Michael established a series of annual James Beard Foundation fundraising dinners, as well as developed local seminars and special events that featured celebrity chefs from all over the country. Michael and his recipes have been featured in numerous publications both locally and nationally including Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Wine Spectator and Robb Report. Having lent his face and name to a number of major ad campaigns, including those for Grey Poupon mustard, Vita-Prep Blenders, Kikkoman Products and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, Michael continues to rank among the nation’s most recognized and respected chefs.
