  • Military Monday Story 8-24-2020

For millions of Americans, the availability of public transportation is the determining factor in their ability to access jobs and any care they require. For a lot of those people, they either live outside the range of public transit or the places they need to go to are outside of public transit zones, forcing them to miss those opportunities. Forcing them to have to walk for miles to get where they need to be.
Why do we do what we do?

Life is not always predictable. Everyday people unexpectedly get sick, lose their job, or have their car break down on them. Most people do not expect those things to happen. Cars 4 Heroes is here to help people through those times by giving them transportation so that they can get back on their feet and turn their lives around. Our founder, Terry Franz, will tell people, “Our program is not called fix my life, we are just here to give them a tool to help them fix their lives.”
Every year, we give hundreds of cars to families and people in need. For some, it is a wheelchair van that allows them to take their wheelchair bound family member out for the first time in years and for others it is just a simple car that can get them to work and doctors’ appointments.
If our organization did not exist, would someone invent it?

There are other charities that sound very similar to ours, but we are different in one major way. The cars we give away are donated. We do not take in donated cars, sell them and then buy other cars to give away.  Now, not every car we get is road worthy or need major repairs and those that are not are sold with the proceeds going towards fixing other cars and supporting events.
Cars 4 Heroes cannot exist without the many people around us. From local radio stations such as 101.1 The Fox or tow companies like Redline Tow, they all are critical to helping us help those who gave so much for us.

HISTORY IN A BIT MORE DEPTH
Rik Emmett gained international recognition as the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist with Triumph from 1975 to 1988. Five gold & platinum decades in the music biz provided entry into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame, the Music Industry Hall of Fame, the Junos Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Walk of Fame.  with a few ‘Best Guitarist’ awards in various categories garnered along the way. Emmett morphed from Smooth Jazz awards in ’05 and ’07 to the worldwide release of a prog rock project called Airtime in ‘07, to a Latin / Mediterranean guitar trio project called ‘ Trifecta ‘ in 2009 (nominated for a Best Instrumental Juno).  The full-blown rock band project, RES 9, by Rik Emmett & RESolution9, was released worldwide by the MASCOT / PROVOGUE label in 2016.  His latest 2020 creative recording project is Folk Songs for the Farewell Bonfire, (The Bonfire Sessions) comprised of 18 solo acoustic / vocal tracks, as well as 6 jazz guitar instrumentals, available exclusively as downloads at www.rikemmett.com.   Searching backwards chronologically,  the 18th and 19th albums of his independent career (released through his website, www.rikemmett.com ) were “ Marco’s Secret Songbook ”, [2012] a concept album with 15 music tracks, a spoken word narrative & symphonic underscore:  and “ Then Again ”, [also 2012] an acoustic duo with Dave Dunlop, reworking the most popular Triumph repertoire with new arrangements. In 2011 “ reCOVERy Room 9 “ was released (also an acoustic duo with Dave Dunlop ), featuring nine cover songs from a wildly eclectic range of pop music.  Rik was a popular columnist for Guitar Player magazine (his 13 years of Back to Basics resulting in his published educational series, For The Love of Guitar), and an innovative music educator of long standing with Humber College in Toronto, and is the Artistic Director Emeritus of the annual Songstudio Songwriting Workshop.

A guitar magazine once wrote that Rik Emmett was “… his own worst enemy ... one of the only guitarists out there who may be too talented for his own damn good”.  In a digital sound bite world, this offers insight on a music biz lifer, recognizing a unique artist, still going strong.   For 48 years, as his own worst enemy, Rik has made choices as a loyal friend to his gifts - never a slave to fashion.  Rik offers his best to every audience, of every stripe, in every piece of music that he performs, holding true to the magic power of the music.

  • Horse Soldier Bourbon Interview
Someone has to be the first. When the U.S. military enters an international conflict, some soldier has to be the first to lead his unit into combat. That soldier is like the tip of a dagger, bravely entering a life and death conflict. Today we’ll learn the remarkable story of a young Kansas man who served his nation in this amazing way.

Mark Nutsch is the former commander of the first Green Beret unit which went in to Afghanistan after the bombing of 9-11. His harrowing and heroic true story would become a major motion picture.

Mark Nutsch grew up near Washington, Kansas. Today his family farms in Wabaunsee County near the rural community of Alma, population 783 people. Now, that’s rural.  Mark came to K-State where he joined the college rodeo team.

After graduating from K-State, he joined the U.S. Army and became an officer in the special forces. He was captain of a unit called Operational Detachment-Alpha 595 and led missions to Uzbekistan and Kuwait. In early September 2001, he joined the battalion staff.

Then came Sept. 11, 2001. Terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into New York’s Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Like many people, Mark Nutsch watched it happen and tried to make sense of it all. He was with his six-month-pregnant wife and their two young children at the time.

The U.S. military immediately began planning a response. It was called Task Force Dagger. Captain Mark Nutsch was reunited with his unit. They would ultimately be designated to be the first to go fight the Taliban.

Mark Nutsch’s 12-man unit was an experienced, mature crew. “We averaged 32 years old, had eight years’ experience, and most of us were married with two kids,” Mark said.

The unit faced the tallest of odds. They would be outgunned and outnumbered 40-to-one, in unfamiliar enemy territory with uncertain allies.

On Oct. 19, 2001, Mark and his unit were helicoptered into Uzbekistan. There they connected with local Muslim soldiers who also opposed the Taliban. They began the campaign to retake Afghanistan. But instead of jeeps or tanks, the local Afghan fighters used an unexpected type of transportation: Horses.

Fortunately, farmboy Mark Nutsch knew his way around horses. He gave some quick riding lessons to his fellow soldiers. K-State President Richard Myers, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recalled receiving the unprecedented request to airlift saddles, saddle blankets and hay to the site. The military did so.

The Afghan and American fighters would eventually go through the desert and mountains on horseback to accomplish their mission. Against the odds, all 12 men in Mark Nutsch’s unit survived. Operation Enduring Freedom ended with the overthrow of the Taliban, as jubilant Afghans celebrated in the streets.

This amazing story was recounted in a best-selling book named Horse Soldiers. After the files were declassified, the story was made into a movie named 12 Strong. Mark Nutsch’s character, named Captain Mitch Nelson in the movie, is portrayed in the show by actor Chris Hemsworth who also plays Thor in the Avenger series.

In real life, Mark Nutsch received a Bronze Star with valor for his courage and leadership. He is now a consultant for Army Special Operations and has opened a whiskey distillery business. He also remains supportive of his family and the Flint Hills of Kansas.

Mark was recently named by the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation as National Honorary Campaign Chair for the Foundation’s Next Vistas fundraising campaign to benefit the Flint Hills Discovery Center. For more information, see www.flinthillsdiscovery.org/foundation.

Someone has to be first. Some soldier has to be the first one to lead his unit into battle on behalf of his nation. In the aftermath of 9-11, it was Captain Mark Nutsch from rural Kansas who led his team on that initial mission. Now he is continuing to serve his state and nation as a volunteer with the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation. We commend Mark Nutsch and all soldiers, families and veterans who are making a difference with their service. I appreciate these brave young men and women who are putting duty first.

  • Comedian Pat McGann Interview
Pat McGann is quickly rising as one of the sharpest stand-ups in the comedy world. A relative latecomer to the scene, Pat began stand up at the age of 31 after realizing he was not very good at selling packaging. He hustled his way to become the house emcee at Zanies Chicago, where he distinguished himself as especially adept at working the crowd. A husband and father of 3 young children, Pat’s appeal stems from his quick wit & relatable take on family life & marriage.
In 2017, McGann began touring as the opening act for Sebastian Maniscalco, moving with him from clubs, to theater, and to arenas, including 4 sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. McGann’s relatively short, but impressive resume, includes performances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Montreal’s famed Just For Laughs Festival, Gilda’s LaughFest, The Great American Comedy Festival and the Nashville Comedy Fest. McGann still calls Chicago home.
