🎙️ Welcome back to Plant Fuelled! 🎙️
Over a third of us struggle to fall asleep or wake up repeatedly throughout the night. Sleep deprivation is more common than ever, with the average person getting just 6.5 hours of sleep per night—far below the recommended amount. And it’s not just about feeling groggy the next day. Chronic sleep issues are fueling a surge in life-threatening conditions, from cardiovascular disease and diabetes to severe mental health disorders—often going undiagnosed.
One of the biggest culprits? Sleep apnea—a condition becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly among those experiencing peri- and menopause, where some of the worst sleep disruptions occur. With over 2 billion people worldwide struggling with poor sleep, it’s clear we’re facing a global sleep crisis. But why?
We often blame modern habits—endless scrolling on TikTok, late-night Instagram doomscrolling, blue light exposure—but is this truly the root cause? My own assumptions about the link between screen time and poor sleep didn’t match up with the research. So what’s really happening?
To break it all down, I’m joined by Josh Piper, a leading sleep clinician at ResMed’s London Sleep Clinic. He’s spent years studying the science of sleep and has an abundance of knowledge to help us understand why sleep is deteriorating—and what we can do about it.
🔥 In This Episode, We Explore:
✅ The shocking rise of undiagnosed sleep disorders and their long-term health consequences
✅ Why sleep apnea is becoming more common—and how to identify the warning signs
✅ The impact of hormonal changes in peri- and menopause on sleep quality
✅ The science of sleep progression—how our sleep cycles change over time
✅ The role of exercise and lifestyle choices in improving sleep quality
✅ The truth about screen time, social media, and blue light—is it really as bad as we think?
✅ Sleep paralysis demons—what’s happening in our brains when they appear?
✅ Practical, science-backed strategies to cultivate better sleep habits and wake up feeling truly rested
Josh’s insights go far beyond the usual "get off your phone before bed" advice. This conversation is packed with cutting-edge research, expert insights, and actionable steps to help you take control of your sleep and, ultimately, your long-term health.
