Macquarie University Energy Expert Lurion De Mello told Mike Hosking fuel prices aren't just being affected by what's happening in the Strait of Hormuz, but also by how much supply is coming out of Russia.
He says there's some guarantee of supply coming out through the Strait of Hormuz, but Singapore still relies on supplies from Russia, and therefore, so does New Zealand.
De Mello told Hosking the cost of getting the oil to the refinery is actually a lot higher than the benchmark.
He says it would actually cost closer to US$200 to $250 when factoring in shipping and insurance costs, which have risen sharply.
