Good evening. Southern California. I'm Michael Mosby.
Step outside and you'll feel the calm before the bake, we're currently sitting at a pleasant 77 degrees under clear skies. But don't get used to this moderation, we're staring down the barrel of a historic heat wave. High pressure is building overhead. That so-called "nation's air conditioner"βthe cool marine layer we usually rely onβis about to be switched off.
As the sun sets. Here's what's happening right now. Down in San Diego County, you're seeing some patchy fog along the coast this morning. It should burn off by mid-morning, elsewhere, skies are mostly clear. Tonight, expect mostly clear conditions across Greater Los Angeles with a low around 58 degrees. San Diego drops to about 54, in the Inland Empire, look for a low near 54.
Sunday brings the first big jump, it's going to feel like summer. Downtown Los Angeles tops out at 86 degrees, head to the Inland Empire. And highs soar to near 94, san Diego stays a bit cooler, with the coast reaching 77 degrees. But the real story is the heat arriving next week.
We've an Extreme Heat Watch in effect from Monday evening through Friday evening. This is dangerous stuff, tuesday could be the peak, with Downtown LA hitting 101 degrees. The Inland Empire might reach 100, even the coast will bake, with highs in the 90s. This is about 54 degrees above normal for mid-March.
Looking ahead. Here's your heads-up for the week ahead, while here comes a prolonged, record-breaking heat event. The heat builds Monday, peaks Tuesday and Wednesday. And holds strong through Friday. Overnight lows will stay warm, offering little relief. This kind of heat stress is a real threat, especially if you don't have air conditioning. If you're planning outdoor activities, you'll want to shift them to early morning.
See you tomorrow.
