  • Last Light Diner. I Wasn't Supposed To Hear Cole Alone. | S1 | E6

Sam Mercer has been the warden of the Last Light Diner for a month, and he has been stealing from the dead. Three cassettes sit on the office desk — JC 79, JC 81, JC 84 — pulled out of a drawer he was told to leave alone and played alone, in pieces, in the dead hour after the four AM close. The third case has two tooth marks bitten into the plastic.

Tonight he lays all three out in a row to start over. Hal comes down the hall and does not put them back. He drags out the chair nobody sits in, turns it around, and sits down across the desk. Play JC seventy-nine from the top, kid. You're not supposed to hear Cole alone.

James Cole was a mailman in Boise. No wife, no kids, no Mercer blood in him anywhere. The building picked him anyway in 1979, and by his second tape he sounds like a man certain he can do this for twenty more years. On that tape he tells Sam the thing nobody told him: the peace inside these walls stops them from laying a hand on each other. It does not stop them from touching the building.

The bell rings before the tape finishes. There is a man in a navy polo shirt in booth nine at one in the morning, no vehicle in the lot, ordering a Reuben with his hands flat on the table where Sam can see them.

Episode 6 of Last Light Diner. Best experienced in order, in the dark, with headphones.

Last Light Diner is a rules-based horror story set in the high desert of eastern Oregon. A roadside diner that has never closed since 1948. A cook who won't set foot outside. Customers who only come after midnight — and rules, handed down through four generations, that keep something underneath the floor asleep.

  • Last Light Diner. I Looked In The Trunk Of The Cruiser. | S1 | E5

Sam Mercer has been warden of the Last Light Diner for 4 weeks, and he sleeps on the office cot now, because the cot is inside the building and his bed is not. The mail comes at 1:30 PM. Bills, junk addressed to a man who does not exist, and a hand-addressed letter in blue ink with a Reno return address, sent to Ruth Mercer by a woman who does not know Ruth is dead. Sam knows the handwriting. He has not seen it in 3 years. He reads it twice, puts it in the drawer, and does not reply. At 6:15 PM a Malheur County deputy named Hank Reyes takes the far stool and asks Sam how he's settling in without putting a question mark on it, then asks if he's sleeping and looks at him a beat too long. Then 6 hunters out of Idaho come in, and for an hour the building sounds the way a diner should. At 8:15 PM a man in a trooper's uniform takes the booth by the window and orders coffee and cherry pie. He touches neither one. He sits with his hands folded and watches his own cruiser through the glass. Their lead hunter looks past Sam at that booth and asks, quietly, if the trooper is all right. Lucille Mercer wrote the page for this customer in October 1967, and Sam reads it under the office lamp: serve him, do not ask his name, do not look at the cruiser, and never look in the trunk. Her last line is one sentence, and it is why the page exists. At 9:20 PM an elderly man in a clean wool suit asks for plain oatmeal, no sugar, no milk, and takes his own spoon from his coat. He stays 4 hours. He is not the worst thing in the building. And every few minutes, all night, something inside the trunk of that cruiser makes a sound — and at 12:12 AM Sam finally flinches at it, and Hal meets his eyes through the pass-through and shakes his head once. That is the whole conversation. At 2:26 AM Sam has to take the trash out. Hal tells him exactly how to walk it. Sam has a plan, and the plan is good, and on the second step back his head turns on its own. What he sees pressed flat against the inside of the glass is not the worst part of the night. The worst part is the Officer waiting at the register when he comes back in, saying something true and polite in the voice of a man told to say it exactly that way. He thanks Sam for the coffee, says the pie was excellent as always, leaves exact change, and drives south. At 4:08 AM the office phone rings. It is the hunter, calling from a motel in Ontario, asking about a wallet he left on the seat beside him in the booth — the booth with the empty seat across from it, where a man sat for 40 minutes. What Sam writes in his steno pad after that call is 3 lines long, and he underlines the last one. Then he plays the tape with 2 tooth marks bitten into the case, recorded by a warden on December 17, 1984 — and it ends mid-sentence, and the office door opens, and Hal presses STOP and says nothing at all.

This is Episode 5 of Last Light Diner, a first-person horror series. New episodes every Friday at 7:00 PM Central. Best heard in order, in the dark, with headphones.

Episode 6 drops 08/21/2026 — Sam still doesn't know who's coming, or when.

  • Last Light Diner. The Devil Sat At My Counter And Asked About My Mother. | S1 | E4

Sam Mercer has been the warden of the Last Light Diner for three weeks, and the rules in his steno pad are starting to outnumber the nights he's worked. The man in the long wool coat came in on a Wednesday, ordered coffee black, drank it in forty-three minutes, and paid with a coin older than the country he was standing in. Two nights later, he comes back. Hal turns off the flat-top when the bell rings, puts a flat hand on the kitchen doorframe, and does not move for forty minutes. The three women in the front booth stop knitting. Then a second man walks in — a good suit, warm smile, expensive shoes — and sits four stools down, and tells Sam that his customer's cup is getting low, and that a kind warden would pour before a man has to ask. He also says he knows what really killed Ruth Mercer, and that he'll tell Sam for nothing.Everything in this diner is a trade. Nothing here is for nothing. What Sam does in the next ninety seconds is the first thing he's done in three weeks that Hal nods at. Then Hal tells him whose coffee he's been pouring, and Lucille Mercer explains the rest from a page written in October of 1975.Before the sign clicks off at four, Sam sees the dish pit running with nobody standing at it — and then he opens a drawer he was told to leave alone, and puts in a tape recorded by a man who died in that building in 1984.This is Episode 4 of Last Light Diner, a first-person horror series. • Last Light Diner. A Child Came In And Asked For Blood. | S1 | E3

Sam Mercer has been the warden of the Last Light Diner for three weeks, and he has started writing the rules down in a steno pad he keeps in his back pocket. He has four of them. There are more than four. On a Wednesday night in October, between the dinner rush and close, a boy walks in alone and sits down in booth six — and the bell over the door does not ring. Hal doesn't say a word. He just holds up seven fingers. Rule seven: a child comes in alone after dark, you ask what they want to drink. If they say water, you serve it in a glass, no ice, and you let them sit. The boy in booth six does not say water. What Sam does next he does without understanding any of it — the phone off the hook, the walk through the kitchen, the instruction not to look back. Then Hal opens the journal to 1953 and lets a dead man explain what the diner was built on top of, who came to the family in the winter of 1946, and why the name Mercer is not a name. And before the night is over, a customer who has come in every Tuesday since 1962 walks through the door on a Wednesday, sits down, orders the same thing he always orders, and smiles at Sam with a smile that does not move. Six days later he comes back and doesn't remember any of it. This is Episode 3 of Last Light Diner, a first-person horror series. New episodes release every Friday at 7:00 PM Central. • Last Light Diner. The Last Page Was Torn Out. | S1 | E2

Sam Mercer has been the warden of the Last Light Diner for ten days, and he still doesn't know what he's the warden of. His grandmother left him a building he can't sell, a cook who won't explain anything, and a locked drawer full of cassette tapes labeled in her own handwriting. When the drawer finally opens, the voice that comes out of it is Ruth Mercer at forty years old, alone in the back office in 1985, reading rules into a microphone because everyone who could have taught them to her was already dead. Sam listens between customers. He learns what to do when someone pays in old coins. He learns what the bell means when nobody walks in. Then he opens her journal to the last page she ever wrote — and finds the page after it torn out, the tear running down toward the floor at an angle no one standing at that desk could have made. • Last Light Diner. I Inherited the Worst Job in Oregon. | S1 | E1

Sam Mercer hasn't spoken to his grandmother in fifteen years when a lawyer calls to tell him she's dead — and that he's inherited her diner on a lonely stretch of Oregon highway. The will can't be contested, the property can't be sold, and the only instruction she left behind is three underlined words: Don't close it. Three nights into the job, Sam wakes up on the floor with someone else's blood on his shirt, a dead woman's voice reading rules from the back office, and a customer smiling at him from the one booth he was told never to touch. This is Episode 1 of Last Light Diner, a first-person horror series.
