I felt like with me posting this mix the day after my birthday (on Mixcloud), it only made sense to use a recording that I named "Jamie's gift to himself". It's a live recording from my monthly at Clockwork, but this was the day after djing a set at Alvaro G's "Forty Nine" party, where I wanted to keep playing proper house music... so that's exactly what I did the next day at Clockwork! While recording, I had 2 people come up to compliment the music. When I asked if they were visiting or local, they were both locals, and when I asked a follow up, I already knew the answer - "did you used to go to Roxy Blu?", and of course they both said yes. So if you want to hear my personal taste in house music (heavily weighted with classics from the late 90's/early 00's), hit play now!

The Soul Shack turned 19 back in November (2024, sorry this is so late here, go to Mixcloud for current mixes) and we celebrated at Better Days in Miami the best way possible...with absolute freedom musically! (But warning, I used that freedom to include some Taylor Swift mashups and live blends for one of the staff at Better Days) If you want to hear what that sounds like click play to hear a crazy eclectic mix (I was just there again last weekend, but this recording is from November 8th, you gotta wait for the new recordings! Hell, I still haven't posted my mix from The Broken Shaker LA last July, but it has summer vibes all over it, being recorded at a rooftop pool, so that one will wait for the summer)

It's back! When I got booked to do a cool holiday party in Toronto (where we'd previously talked musically about bands like LCD Soundsystem and The Smashing Pumpkins) I knew it was going to be the perfect opportunity to record this year's Christmas mix. The tradition is "Christmas Cocktails", but with the vibe of music I got to play in this mix, I think "A Soul Shack Christmas" is more appropriate, but give it a listen and you be the judge.

I'm so behind on posting the mixes here on podomatic (they're up to date over on Mixcloud) but similar to last year, I had to jump ahead and post the Christmas mix while it's relevant.

Here is my annual lounge music recap from last year. This is all the non-house stuff, filled with soul, rn'b, hip hop, a ton of edits (including a handful of my own), nudisco, daytime disco, amapiano, kaytranada type beats, retro remixes, boogie edits, even some drum & bass...all the good stuff! Not all necessarily released in 2024, but I discovered the songs last year.

It (was) January, and that means looking back with my #housemusic recap from the past year. A journey through various styles of house and the tracks that caught my attention in 2024, so some might have been released earlier (and thanks to a hard drive crash last spring a huge chunk of my music library shows as being added in April 2024, and I lost Serato crates, resulting in me accidentally including a song here, that I already included in my 2022 wrap up because time is blurry at my age - can you guess which song it is lol!)

So back in April of last year, when I was celebrating my 50th at Better Days, along with the "So This Is 50" mix I posted earlier, I also recorded a new bar promo mix. Here's both parts, with the 1st half starting super chill and sort of staying at more of an urban tempo and under 110bpm the whole time. Lot's of 90's throwback hip hop & rn'b, some 80's retro and a bunch of various other grooves, blends, reworks and eclectic goodness and then the 2nd half starts at mid tempo amapiano / kaytranada vibes, building to house, then closing out with throwback hip hop. It occurred to me that I've never posted a recording from Mansion House as a Soul Shack mix, so I figured with me playing there this Saturday for The Grape & Wine Festival (old, but I am there this Friday for Canada Day weekend), why not post my mix from when I was there in August. Most of the time I get to play inside (instead of the patio) which gives me the freedom musically to play like this mix (as opposed to the patio, where I would need to play more mainstream party bangers for the college crowd). I'm brought back "Cottage Cocktails"! I haven't posted a Cottage Cocktails mix since 2019, but after djing an amazing cottage tent wedding last summer, I was inspired to record a cocktail mix that would be the perfect soundtrack for that cottage setting (but the couple that weekend had their own plans for cocktail music) so the following weekend I recorded this during cocktails at a wedding downtown Toronto. Recorded in the big city, but this is meant to be listened to up in Muskoka, or at the very least while floating in a pool, or perhaps just sitting around a backyard bonfire (or sipping on a coffee or tea in your favourite comfy chair). Perfect laid back vibes as we say goodbye to summer and hello to sweater weather. Hope you enjoy!

The people spoke! I asked Instagram what I should post first, a house focused live recording from Beacon last month, or my eclectic 2024 Bar Promo that I recorded back at the same time as "So This Is 50", and the people wanted the Beacon mix first, so here it is! Beacon is an older crowd to begin with, and this particular night there were 2 birthday parties for women around my age, so there was plenty of retro remixes being thrown in the mix! It's a full night mix so it starts off a little more chill while dinner is ending, then picks up the energy as the night transitions from restaurant to bar. Hope you enjoy!

How am I 50???? Well I am, and I celebrated in Miami, including djing several happy hour sets at Better Days...where they give me the musical freedom to record mixes like this! (Thank you Will and team)  The first half starts off chill, a little lovers rock remixes, lots of rn'b, 90's hip hop, some old school and retro (you know me, nice and eclectic - hell, I start with a slow Adele song!) and then gets into some old school / retro and even a nostalgic freestyle set, reminiscent of my youthful March Break trips to Miami, listening to Power 96! Then the 2nd half I'm starting to build up the energy with some indie dance, then into some retro remixes, into house remixes of hip hop, into a throwback 90's hip hop set. (Ignore the fader cut outs in The City Is Mine near the end, DJ Spiff had just pulled up to the booth to head on after me, and the Brooklyn in him couldn't be held back lol!).
