Jackson fires up Fire Prevention week The theme of Fire Prevention Week in Jackson on Oct. 5-11 will focus on safely recharging lithium-ion batteries for home use. The Jackson Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to promote the campaign. Most electronics used in homes every day — smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones and toys — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. If not used correctly or if damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire or explode. It’s important to take stock of what uses those type of batteries in your home....

GROVE HILL — An 18-wheeler overturned on the curve of North Jackson Street that connects to U.S. Highway 43 on Sept. 26, according to Grove Hill police. The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. when a semi driven by Terrance Williams of Mississippi went too fast into the curve and flipped onto its side, striking a street sign. JACKSON — E.J. Crowell rushed for 151 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns and No. 1-ranked Class 4A Jackson’s defense flexed its muscle in a 33-0 win over Class 5A LeFlore on Sept. 26. The Aggies’ defense, which is second in Class 4A against the score, allowed only 48 yards of total offense. “We’re lights out on defense right now,” Jackson coach Cody Flournoy said. “We’re playing at that championship level but still having some hiccups offensively. We just got too many offensive penalties and shot ourselves in the foot.” Crowell scored on runs of 7, 12 and 7...

Over the past six decades, Alabama’s Adult Education Programs have been transformed by a quiet revolution that has been extraordinarily successful. It was my honor to be able to speak to the annual Adult Education Conference at the downtown Montgomery Renaissance Center in late June. When I accepted their invitation to speak, I thought there would be 50 to 60 attendees. However, when I walked in, I amazingly saw over 400 passionate, positive, energized educators and administrators that filled the venue. It quickly dawned on me that we have one of the most successful Adult Education Programs in America. These...
