    Jackson’s E.J. Crowell, who is considered the nation’s top running back in the class of 2026, will reveal his college choice on June 26 at a commitment party, he announced on social media. The five-star prospect dramatically moved up the timing of his commitment, which was originally planned for Dec. 31.   • Health department urges mosquito safety

    As mosquito season ramps up, the Alabama Department of Public Health urges all residents to take preventive measures to protect themselves and their communities from mosquito borne diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus and La Crosse virus. Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. One small container can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in a week. To prevent breeding: • Dump and drain standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pet dishes, birdbaths, tires, tarps and children’s toys. • Clean and scrub containers that hold water weekly to remove mosquito eggs. • Cover rain barrels...

  • Fighting the surge of violence

    You would have to be living under a rock to be unaware that two of our state’s metropolitan areas have a serious problem with violent crime. Montgomery and Birmingham have become crime-ridden war zones that resemble third-world countries such as Mexico run by drug cartels. The rampant, open-ended violence and cavalier murders in Montgomery and Birmingham leapt so high in 2024 that people who still lived there were scared to come out of their homes for fear of being shot.   • Growing goodness

    On May 8, Rebuilding Together of South Alabama partnered with the Clarke County Alabama Extension Office to plant a community garden at the Jackson Senior Center. The 4-H homeschool group planted vegetables in the raised beds to provide the seniors with fresh vegetables this summer. The event was coordinated by Rebuilding Together’s Trista Stout-Walker, Robin Paul with the Clarke County Extension office and Cindy Howell from Jackson Senior Center. Volunteers included Wood Richardson, Nicholas Pugh, Nolan Pugh, Olivia Pugh, James Overstreet, Ella Overstreet, Juliette Harris, Chloe Weaver, Kinsley Weaver, Will Weaver, Sherm Overstreet, Tyler Overstreet and Jessica Overstreet.

    THOMASVILLE — Chandler Long of Grove Hill and Zykieran Portis of Thomasville were among the 1,300 students named to the Dean’s List at Jacksonville State University in the spring semester. Thomasville’s Taylor Robinson was named to the President’s List for the spring semester. To be named to the Dean’s List, students must earn a 3.5 to 3.99 grade-point average for the semester while completing at least 12 GPA hours of course credit. To be named to the President’s List, students must earn a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester while completing at least 12 hours of GPA course credit.

  • Broadband upgrade sought in Clarke Co.

    GROVE HILL — Another broadband internet provider addressed Clarke County Commissioners on Tuesday about the possibility of boosting coverage to underserved areas of the county.
