Our guest this morning is Louise Sattler.

Louise is the founder of Signing Families. She attended the University of Delaware where she received her certification as a school psychologist and completed her graduate studies at Penn State.

She specializes in helping individuals and organizations build communication bridges through sign language instruction and works with first responders during disasters to engage and communicate effectively with people with special needs.

Louise trains EMS personnel about different disabilities, such as Autism and Deafness. How to approach a child or adult with Autism is much different than the means one would engage a child with deafness. 

She teaches basic sign language communication skills so if the victim uses Spanish, ASL or a tap picture system, the First Responder will be ready to communicate with less barriers.

Louise has been featured in Parent Magazine, Family First Magazine, First Responders Television and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Our guest this morning is Mayor Michael Gin.

Mike is currently serving on his 2nd Term as the 28th Mayor of the City of Redondo Beach.

He works as a Senior Staff Analyst for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and is responsible for project management and coordination activities relating to the Department's procurement of an Electronic Health Records system for all Los Angeles County medical facilities.

 

Mike previously served as a Field Deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. He represented Supervisor Knabe in the communities of San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Westfield, Academy Hill, and the cities of Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates.

He also served as District 3 Councilman for the City of Redondo Beach from 1995-2003 and then retired due to term limits. In 1999, Mike was reelected without opposition to his seat on the Redondo Beach City Council.

Prior to his election to the City Council in March 1995, Mike was Vice-Chairman of the Redondo Beach Planning Commission and was previously Chairman of the Redondo Beach Preservation Commission.

There’s a whole list of things Mayor Gin has accomplished during his tenure but we only have a half hour with him this morning and we want to discuss the Redondo Beach waterfront revitalization with him, so let’s get right to it.

Where most new psych bands seem to be either cerebral, weird or garage punky (all of which are just fine by me), Temporal Love tap into a more timeless funky blues psych vein which would sound equally as at home in 1969 or amidst the grunge explosion of the early nineties as it does now.

If you can imagine what the Tea Party's first couple of albums would have sounded like had they been raised on Hendrix's Band of Gypsy's rather than Led Zeppelin II, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect here.

Heavy psychedelic blues rock with heaps of cool pentatonic riffs, wailing leads played through a wah-wah, very strong vocals which recall the Tea Party's Jeff Martin or a psychedelicized Jeff Healey, a solid rhythm section, smoking jams and some completely unexpected and totally fitting saxophone, all delivered by a talented young band who look like they should be co-headlining with Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Fillmore in 1969.

Highlights? The whole damn album pretty much, with "Rising Sun" being the track I'm finding myself humming inadvertently, with everything else a pretty close second.

Essential listening for those who like their psychedelia to have some soul.

Lisa is a Certified Thanatologist and Death Educator/Consultant with over 15 years teaching and coaching experience, both domestically and internationally.

She specializes in crisis communication skills for discussing bad news and loss.

She educates law enforcement, forensic, healthcare, clergy, mortuary and corporate professionals on death notification methods and procedures;

crisis communication skills following a mass fatality; working with those impacted from sudden or traumatic loss; workplace loss from death or termination; effective apologies for error or negligence; counseling or termination of employees;

Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, Horizontal Violence and Secondary Traumatic Stress in front-line occupations.

Lisa presented at the 2007 European Transplant Coordinator Organization’s Congress in Prague, the National Health Service Blood and Tissue agency in Liverpool, England, the 6th and 7th International Conference on Grief and Bereavement in Jerusalem and London.

She has been published on WebMD and the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology.

Our guest this morning is Randy Berler. Randy is the founder of The South Bay Film Society.

Originally from Mineola, NY, Randy attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received as MS in Urban and Regional Planning and during that time ran a film society.

Until 1980, he was a Natural Resources and Land Use Planner for the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.

He returned to school and graduated in 1983 with an MFA from the School of Cinema Arts at the University of Southern California and spent the next few years as an editor on non-theatrical films.

He worked as a Planner for the City of Redondo Beach from 1985 to 2008, ultimately becoming the Planning Director.

He retired in 2009 and just this past year founded The South Bay Film Society.

The South Bay Film Society was created to bring the best of new foreign and independent films to the big screen in the South Bay.

They screen films shortly after they play art house theaters in West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Pasadena and well before the films are available on DVD.

They hold discussions after screenings and hope through these film events to foster connections and friendships between people in the South Bay interested in film and the arts.
