    Our guest this morning is Richard Foss, journalist, author, culinary historian, and lecturer based in Manhattan Beach.
    Richard is also our local food writer for the Easy Reader News and keeps us up to speed on the South Bay dining scene, which began exploding about ten years ago.
    When the coronavirus pandemic caused a total shutdown of the economy, governments, companies, restaurants, retail shops, and service providers scrambled to reimagine how to conduct business and keep their doors open, metaphorically speaking.
    While many businesses continued to operate with employees working from home, the restaurant industry was particularly hard hit.
    Faced with emergency mandates from every level of government, the initial shutdown, partial re-opening, another shutdown, special equipment and PPE costs, staff shortages, and breakdown of the supply chain, it’s been a harrowing rollercoaster ride for restaurants large and small.
    South Bay restaurants have managed the crisis in a variety of ways - some chose to wait it out and closed their doors for the duration; others became neighborhood markets; many now offer only take-out and/or delivery; countless eateries have taken to the streets, parking lots, curbs and alleys for alfresco dining; and sadly, too many have closed for good.

  • Altaf Amlani, Blue Diamond Jeweler
    Our guest this morning is Altaf Amlani, owner of Blue Diamond Jeweler.
    Altaf grew up in Uganda and Kenya, received his education in England and came to the US at the age of 18. He is a third-generation jeweler. His father opened their jewelry business in the United States in 1974 where Altaf worked alongside his father together and learned the business. At that time, they were a strictly wholesale business. He enjoyed meeting with store owners and their customers and started to realize he enjoyed working directly with the public. Eventually, Altaf took over the business and made improvements, one of which was selling their jewelry to the public.
    Today, Blue Diamond Jeweler has a five star rating and has consistently been voted number one jeweler on the west side. This year included! They sell fine jewelry with a focus on custom engagement rings. Having their own manufacturing site, they create the beautiful pieces you see in their stores. Their focus is to create an everlasting bond with our customers.
    Altaf believes they have a very conscious and mindful approach to business which is perhaps is what most distinguishes them from other jewelers.
    This morning, we’ll discuss the importance of the gem market, working with credible jewelers, and how Blue Diamond Jeweler gives back.

    Our guest this morning is Linda McLoughlin Figel, one of the owners of {pages}, a bookstore.
    {pages} is an independent, full service bookstore located in downtown Manhattan Beach and was founded in 2010 by three local, passionate bibliophiles - Patty, Linda & Margot - with the goal of bringing a quality independent bookstore to the South Bay.
    Today, {pages} is the place for book lovers of all ages, where reading, meeting and discussing books is a way of life. They offer a carefully curated selection of new fiction, non-fiction, children’s, cooking, surf, coffee table books and bestsellers. They have a knowledgeable and caring staff who can match any reader with the perfect book.
    They regularly host author events and book signings, weekly story times, and four monthly book clubs. {pages} provides complimentary gift wrap, and gift cards are available for that hard to select for reader.
    This morning, we’ll learn about the series of Publisher’s Rep Nights that have been taking place the last few Thursday nights, with the last one happening tonight at 6 p.m.

  • Sandpipers’ Holiday Homes Tour
    Our guests this morning are Ashley Goldsmith, Sandpipers' 89th Co-President and Gloria Correa, Sandpipers’ Director of this year’s Holiday Homes Tour.
    Gloria joined Sandpipers in 2017 and has spent the last 3 years working on the Holiday Homes Tour. Being a designer in her personal life made her the perfect fit as this year's tour Director. 
    Ashley joined Sandpipers in 2012 as a way to connect with her community and get involved. Before being elected Co-President, she had held many chair and board positions, but her favorite role was always working with the Holiday Homes Tour team, where she held the positions of Facilitator, Event Co-Chair for 3 years, and Director. Ashley's years of experience helped take the vision of a virtual tour and make it a reality. As Co-President, it is her hope that the Sandpipers' organization continues to grow and increase their philanthropic and community outreach programs to make the South Bay a better place for everyone.
    The Sandpiper’s Holiday Homes Tour is one of the most popular events in the South Bay and this morning, our guests will fill us in on what we can expect at this year’s virtual version.

    Our guests this morning are David Brennan from the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation and Jill Lamkin, Executive Director for the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professional Association.
    David Brennan is the Director of Development & Partnerships at MBEF. He is responsible for establishing and maintaining partnerships between MBEF and the local community, including parents, PTAs, and businesses throughout the South Bay and beyond. Focused on implementing solicitation strategies for new and increased donations, David connects prospective partners with the programs and leadership of MBEF. 
    Jill Lamkin is the Executive Director for the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professional Association. Jill oversees marketing, advocacy, and community relations for all businesses licensed within Downtown Manhattan Beach. The Downtown Business + Professional Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of over 250 retailers, restaurants, and local businesses.
    This morning, our guests will tell us about the Downtown Manhattan Beach Gives Back Day taking place on Wednesday, November 11, when 11% of sales will be donated to MBEF from participating locations in Downtown MB.

  • Dr. Mungcal, Manhattan Beach Dental Solutions
    Our guest this morning is Dr. Don Mungcal of Manhattan Beach Dental Solutions.
    Dr. Don is a Los Angeles native and loves serving his neighbor’s dental needs. Raised in the San Fernando Valley, he completed undergrad studies at UCLA and received his degree with honors in 1990 after completing the dental program at University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco. His post-graduate experience came in part from his role as an instructor at USC Dental School. Within a few short years, Dr. Mungcal established his practice right in his hometown of Los Angeles. Manhattan Beach Dental has been serving patients since 1992. The love that Dr. Mungcal feels for LA seems to be reciprocal. He has been honored as a Best Dentist in Downtown in “Los Angeles Downtown News” for four consecutive years.
    This morning, we’ll discuss the latest dental technology and the importance of dental health especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Artist Kathleen Keifer, 'California Dreaming' edition of Monopoly
    Our guest this morning is Manhattan Beach resident and artist, Kathleen Keifer.
    Having grown up in Chicago, Kathleen fell in love with California when she moved to Malibu in 1996.
    Primarily a “colorist,” there is a consistent point of view across her contemporary landscapes, pop art, and figurative work. She began painting at a young age and studied art at the University of Notre Dame and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her entrance into the fine art world in 1996 was a sold-out solo show at McLean Gallery in Malibu. Her next ten Malibu exhibitions launched her into the LA art world, with paintings featured in LACMA and MoMA.
    In her most recent work, she has arrived at a distinctive style of overlapping colors and textures that was described by LA magazine as “fluidly capturing pop culture in a tapestry of layered color.”
    Kathleen was recently selected by WS Games/Hasbro to create a limited edition, collectible, Monopoly Game focused on California called ”California Dreaming”. The game was released last week and each and every aspect of the game features Kathleen’s original art.
    This morning, we’ll learn a bit about Kathleen’s work and her Monopoly Game which will make a fantastic holiday gift for all of the California Dreamers!

    Our guest this morning is Julie Tran from the South Bay Association of Realtors.
    Julie graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in Political Science. There, she also worked for a member of California State Senate representing Orange County. Her career in public service continued as a district staff member for California’s 47th Congressional district which united Los Angeles and Orange County. In addition, Julie is an active grassroots organizer, helping to elect candidates and support issues at all levels of government. She has worked on public policy and advocacy for organized Real Estate for the last 4 years at the state level and now represents the South Bay Association of Realtors as their Government Affairs Director, where she manages and implements local government affairs and political activities in support of the real estate industry and the members of the Association.
    This morning, Julie will explain for us the real estate related propositions on the November ballot.
