October 14, 2015 Blue Zones Project Redondo Beach
Our guests this morning are Lauren Nakano and Susan Burden from the Beach Cities Health District.
Lauren Nakano is a South Bay native and long-time resident of the Beach Cities. She is the Director of the Blue Zones Project for the past three years and has been on staff at Beach Cities Health District, the largest preventive health agency in the nation, for the past 20 years. Her professional purpose and passion is transforming communities. Through the Blue Zones Project she has the honor of working with the organizations and individuals in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to implement an innovative community well-being initiative.
Susan Burden is Chief Executive Officer of Beach Cities Health District, where she has served since 2004. She provides strategic leadership and direction to all functions of one of the nation’s largest preventative health agencies and manages $90 million in assets, 175 employees and 700 active volunteers. In 2010, Susan played an integral role in bringing the nationally recognized Blue Zones Project, a community-wide initiative to create healthier and more productive citizens, to the Beach Cities in 2010. Since its inception, the Blue Zones Project has successfully lowered smoking and obesity rates in the community. In addition to her leadership at Beach Cities Health District, Susan is on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association’s L.A. Region, as well as the chambers of commerce in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach.
This morning we’re going to discuss all aspects of the Blue Zones Project and how the BCHD is implementing this initiative in the South Bay.

Our guest this morning is Orianthi Panagaris. Known professionally as Orianthi, she is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist.
Orianthi has played with Michael Jackson as part of his ill-fated This Is It concert series, in Alice Cooper's touring band and with Richie Sambora.
Her debut single According to You peaked at No. 3 in Japan, No. 8 in Australia and No. 17 in the US; her second album, Believe, received a worldwide release in late 2009. In 2009, Orianthi was named one of the 12 Greatest Female Electric Guitarists by Elle magazine. She also won the award as "Breakthrough Guitarist of the Year" for 2010 by Guitar International magazine.
Orianthi will be playing at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on October 17 and this morning, you’ll get to hear what she’s all about and a few of her songs.

Chris Cagle is a business consultant with the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, an organization that provides no cost business and employment services to the South Bay area. He is also president of the Redondo Beach Round Table and an advisory board member for the Redondo Beach Salvation Army, which manages the "meals on wheels" program for the beach cities. A nationally and internationally recognized Recreation and Parks professional and public speaker, Idris Jassim Al-Oboudi is a highly motivated, energetic, passionate leader with vision and a pragmatic approach to recreation issues and needs. Idris is dedicated to high ethical standards, and has proven management ability to develop leadership and programs that deliver quality recreation services in a courteous, cost-efficient manner. He is a leader that creates synergy, providing direction and vision while managing change.
David Ibarra is Manhattan Beach native, born and raised. He grew up in the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Playground Program. A middle child to 5 siblings, David continued in the Parks and Rec family. In 1993 he volunteered for the Playground Program and when he was 18, became a recreation leader. In 2002 he was promoted to supervisor of the Playground Program and isl to this day. For over 17 years he has developed new revenue generating programs, activities and special events. David graduated from Mira Costa High school and studied at El Camino College. He graduated in 2003 from the NRPA Pacific Marketing and Revenue Sources Management School.
This morning, we’re going to learn about the wildly popular Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race which takes place in Downtown Manhattan Beach every October.

Nick Arquette is a regular guest on this program and CEO and Founder of Walk With Sally. A former co-owner of Adia LLC, Nick is passionate with regard to quality of life issues. He is the President/Founder of Assisted Preferred which is the first stop in Senior Placement and Preferred Support in the South Bay. Walk With Sally is a non-profit foundation which provides mentoring to children whose lives have been affected by a parent or sibling with cancer.
