  • A panel on Allied Partners in Space Mission

A bit of different show this week, I have a recording of a panel I hosted last week at the Space Force IT Day hosted by AFCEA NOVA. There were a ton of great discussions that took place and you may hear from some of the other ones in future episodes. My panel however was on the topic of Allied Partners in Space Mission. Joining me, I had the honor of speaking with Col. Shay Warakomski, Deputy Commander for the Combined Force Space Component Command with the U.S. Space Force, as well as Wing Commander Sean Langrish, who is the UK Embassy Space Desk Officer with the British Royal Air Force.

  • The ISS is long overdue for new wardrobe options

A new contract from NASA looks to create the next generation of space suits for astronauts. Tasked with the order is Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon Technologies business. Along with its other partners, it aims to design, develop and demonstrate the next-generation spacesuit for the International Space Station. To learn more, I got the chance to speak with Peggy Guirgis, who is General Manager of Space Systems at Collins Aerospace.

  • Nuclear power could be of some use in space as well

We begin today with nuclear power in space. The idea of a nuclear-powered spacecraft goes back decades. Now it may become reality. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, and NASA are teaming up on a demonstration project. They want to see if a nuclear rocket engine could power flight to Mars. NASA program manager Doctor Anthony Calomino spoke to Federal News Network's Tom Temin about the project.

  • The future of GPS could be on the ground rather than in space

You know when you're using an app that uses GPS in a major city, and it can't quite pin point your location? Well, a new tech company in San Francisco may have a new way of fixing that. As you can imagine it would require a heft amount of hardware, but not necessarily in space. To learn about it, I had the chance to speak with Ganesh Pattabiraman. He's the CEO of the company NextNav.

  • Looking for help with space regulations?

Creating the technology to get to space is hard enough, something that may be just as or even more difficult, navigating your way through the bureaucratic regulations that you need to comply with. As with most industries, those just getting into it are going to have the hardest time learning about the rules in place. Enter the Association of Commercial Space Professionals, who at the end of February 2023 are hosting a Space Regulatory Bootcamp. It's designed specifically for startups and is being done in partnership with the Air Force Research Lab. To learn more about it, I spoke with Bailey Reichelt, partner at Aegis Space Law, and Bryce Kennedy who is the firm's Business Development Director.

  • From the ocean to up above, NOAA is getting ready to monitor traffic in space

We start things off today on the topic of Space Traffic Management. Late last year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA took a step forward in its plans to provide space traffic coordination services to commercial and civil satellite operators operating in the increasingly congested orbits around Earth. Now you may be wondering, just why is this falling under this particular agency's purview? Well that was one of the many questions I asked Dr. Richard Dalbello, who is currently the director of NOAA's Office of Space Commerce, along with how this project came together.

  • What's the economic benefit of NASA programs?
We begin today with looking at the economic impacts of NASA's programs. Not just in states where major facilities exist, the agency says the benefits can be felt in every state in the U.S. To show their work, it's released it's second ever economic impact report. To learn more about what it contained this time around I spoke with Margaret Vo Schaus, NASA's chief financial officer.

  • Canadian Space Agency joining in partnership to observe effects of climate change
NASA has been one of the agencies at the forefront of observing the effects of climate change, and thanks to a collaboration of several space agencies around the world, predicting extreme weather events may be getting more and more accurate. One of the participants in the Atmosphere Observing System mission is the Canadian Space Agency. To discuss the role it will be playing in this project, I got a chance to talk to Thomas Piekutowski, who is head of the AOS mission delivery office at CSA.

  • SpaceX footprint getting larger in aerospace contracting world
When you say Elon Musk, many think of electric cars or more recently what's he doing with his new company Twitter. However Space X should be part of that conversation as well with the impact it's had on the commercial space industry, accounting for several of NASA's contracts itself. To discuss this trend, I spoke to Caleb Harshberger who has been covering SpaceX's footprint on the space industry for Bloomberg Government.
