The Speech Source

On this episode of the series "How I Built my Speech Path Business," we talk with SLP Jacey Bullock.  Jacey spent the beginning of her career as a speech therapist in the school setting, and once she became pregnant with her 3rd child, she knew she wanted to create an opportunity for herself that would allow more time with her children while still using her passion and knowledge as a therapist.  What started as testing out the waters seeing a couple of kids privately quickly turned into a full blown speech therapy clinic with several speech therapists working with and for her.  Jacey never could have imagined that starting a business just a few months shy of having her third baby would have successfully grown into what it is today. 

Jacey goes through her journey with us from marketing strategies, searching for office spaces, finding and hiring the right therapists, serving her patients and families and creating contracts for her employees. 

 One of Jacey's main goals in being a business owner is to create a flexible and empowering work environment that radiates positivity and attracts both clients and therapists alike.   She shares operational strategies that keep her team motivated and her clients returning. From the decision to operate on a private pay system to the freedom of scheduling that allows therapists to maintain work-life harmony, Jacey is proving that her foundational values are key to creating a successful business . She also shares about her sister's partnership in the business and the importance of trust and communication when making those decisions. 

Making sure families are matched with the right therapist is another important goal for Jacey as a business owner.  She knows that the right fit is important for both the therapist and the child, and although it takes time and energy making sure that happens, the effort has proven to keep inquiries coming in and therapist schedules full.

In this episode, we talk with speech pathologist Belle Ormiston about her journey in blending creativity with the discipline of speech pathology. Belle's entry into entrepreneurship began as an endeavor to fill a gap she observed in the market during the global pandemic—an absence of merchandise that connected and appealed to speech therapy professionals.

The creation of her product line, Bee the SLP, marked the beginning of a new chapter.  Continuing as a full time speech therapist at a local pediatric hospital in her city, Belle is balancing her day to day work with entrepreneurship.  Finding a company she trusts to print and fulfill orders, she is able to focus on design and direct sales with her products. 

This episode delves into the realties entrepreneurs face, from the frustration of copycats to the challenges of balancing a primary career with a second business. Belle's honesty about these experiences will resonate with many listeners who may be considering their own entrepreneurial ventures. She discusses the importance of foresight in product planning, particularly for seasonal items, and the critical role of professional advice, like engaging a CPA, to navigate the complex world of business management.  She also shares how she draws inspiration for her creative designs.

In the first episode of our new series "How I Built My Speech Path Business," we talk to pediatric speech pathologist Marcia Church.  Over the last few years, Marcia has built her private practice in the Dallas, Texas area called Pediatric Speech Stars.  Not only has she grown her pediatric private speech practice into a thriving business, but she has also created resources for other speech pathologists to successfully market and brand their own business, as well as an online retail shop with cute apparel for speech therapists! 

Pediatric Speech Stars provides families with direct speech therapy services, consultations and parent coaching.  Marcia discusses how she developed her business geared towards the "modern mom" from website creation and branding photo shoots to a streamlined process in direct patient care that runs off of automations and systems she has put into place.  Throughout the process she realized she could offer other speech pathologists wanting to build their own business something that was missing - a beautiful way to  brand their business, and stock photos specific to speech therapy and speech pathologists. From website template kits to stock photo sets, she has created a way for speech pathologists to have digital and print marketing a strong point in their business venture. 

During  our discussion, Marcia talks to us about the importance of creating clear boundaries in her business, and how she has managed to be successful at this for the purpose of being able to focus on her family.   She teaches other speech pathologists how to organically market and grow their own business while teaching this value of setting boundaries.  She explains that in doing this, it leads to fulfillment.  Marcia's insight on networking, mentorship, and cultivating a supportive community are foundational in her business. She also talks to us about incorporating  passive income and  setting up a business that can eventually be sold.

Marcia's vision and techniques for marketing and branding a business have proven to be successful not only in her own business but in countless other speech pathologist's businesses who have used her services.  Outside of what she can provide through resources and coaching though, one of Marcia's most incredible attributes is her authentic desire to build up and cheer along other entrepreneurs in our field.  This might just be her greatest superpower!

Emily shares her family's personal balance of sugar intake in order to support her children's different nutritional needs and tolerances. Love languages are not a foreign concept to most adults in relationships, but have you ever thought about your children having their own love languages? Knowing your child or patient's love language empowers you to better comprehend your child's unique needs, and respond in a way that fosters a deeper bond and accelerates their development. Not to mention provides so much of the answer to how to motivate, celebrate, or discipline in a way that is productive. We explore the profound impact of these love languages - physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, and acts of service - on our relationship with our little ones.
