We have been shown how trusting God leads to our being made right with Him. In God’s word we have great and precious promises by which we become partakers of His very nature and in how God deals with Abram we see the certainty of God’s promises and how God meets us in our doubt, assuring us of God’s faithfulness and the seriousness of His promises. This trusting in God’s “great and precious promises” leads to our transformation. God’s quiets our fears as we see God as our shield, our protector and rewarder and encourages us to trust in His provision and care.

The Spoken Word February 25, 2026 - Impacting lives for eternity through the teaching of God's Word that His people might be established to express and advance His Kingdom.

In this chapter we five core doctrines that underpin our faith, reminding us of its importance, the necessity of leadership, as well as God’s role in guiding and protecting those who trust in Him through all of life’s challenges and obstacles through Abram’s battle, his rescue of Lot, his refusal to depend on the ungodly instead of God, and his encounter with Melchizedek, the priest/king.

We are engaged in spiritual warfare, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. We have been given weaponry which are not carnal (fleshly or worldly) but are mighty through God for pulling down strongholds, casting down imaginations, and bringing every though into captivity to the obedience of Christ. In Genesis 14 there are lessons we can learn about faith and divine sovereignty, courageous leadership and decisive actions, preparedness and strategic thinking and how to recognize and lay hold to God’s blessings so we can war strategically, effectively, and intelligently; that we might live victoriously.

Looking at Abram’s life and his walk with God and how God is establishing him as the father of those who live by faith there are lessons to be learned, doctrines that is established and examples we, as heirs of the same promises, that we can be partakers of if we will follow faithful Abram. Can changed his name and his character, which points to how He will change us and our nature to make us profitable to His plans and purposes and to reclaim liberty and dominion in the earth through the blessing and the blessing we become.

As Christians we are called to follow those who by faith have laid hold to the promises. Abram believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness. We can look at his walk, how he grows as he continues to follow God's righteous commands and we can learn how to deal with conflict resolution, generosity, faith and the consequences of our choices.

Abram is called by God and God initiates His covenant with Abram. With the call God desires Abram to come out from among his idolatrous people and go to a place. As Abram journeys he encounters difficulty and flees to Egypt, in this decision he is leaning to his own understanding rather than trusting God and he is taught a crucial lesson about the God of the covenant.

How far are you willing to go for God? Make your calling and election sure, then purpose in your heart to go all the way. Relationships are important, especially covenant relationships but they must be prioritized in rank. Our number one priority in life is to the kingdom and the King of that kingdom. In fact, Scripture says “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Our lives must be centered on God’s will rather than personal gain, worry, or worldly pursuits. God knows the things we have need of and He will provide them. We must prioritize God’s rule, righteousness, and purposes above everything else, even family. Set your focus on heaven and let nothing deter you, God will take care of everything else and you will be able to do everything else out of the overflow of grace in your life

We see in this chapter lessons about faith, obedience, and God’s promises. God does not expect perfection from us but He looks for obedience. Abram trusted God’s call and willingly leaves his homeland and family. God promises to bless him, He assures him of divine protection, and promises that his obedience will have a far-reaching impact and the simple act of Abram’s moving forward marks the beginning of God’s covenant with him. We who are in Christ are beneficiaries of that covenantal blessing and like Abram we journey toward a place, making mistakes and learning as we embrace faith, trust in God’s promises, and recognize the broad impact of our obedience on the world around us.

God is moving through Genesis toward our redemption. He is setting the stage of choosing a man through whom He can bring forth a seed that will be a blessing to all of humanity. In Genesis 11 we see the genealogy of Shem leading to that of Terah from who will come Abram the friend of God through whom we, if we are Christ's then we are his seed and heir of the same promises God made to him.
