  • Episode 227: “The Rock” - Dwayne Johnson

Episode 227 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’re finishing our series of episodes on professional wrestlers who enjoyed success in other amateur & professional sports.

In this episode we’re discussing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Before he reached superstardom as a professional wrestler, Johnson was a top high school football recruit as a Defensive Lineman.

Unfortunately, Johnson never realized his potential as he played sparingly at the University of Miami (FL) during the early 1990s.

With his football dreams dashed, Johnson entered the family business & eventually became one of the biggest stars of the “Attitude Era” in the WWF/WWE during the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Due to his charismatic nature, “The Rock” left his championship career behind to pursue acting & has been one of Hollywood’s most marketable stars of the last two decades!

  • Episode 220: “Offensive Genius” - Mike Shanahan

Episode 220 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’re back on the gridiron discussing Mike Shanahan.

As a young hot-shot, Shanahan helped lead the Denver Broncos to multiple Super Bowls as an assistant in the late-1980s. Despite a horrendous first stint as an NFL Head Coach in Los Angeles in the immediate aftermath, Shanahan once again became an in-demand commodity as a Head Coach after a stint in the early 90s with Sam Francisco as their Offensive Coordinator.

During his 14 years as the Head Coach in Denver, Shanahan won the franchise’s first Super Bowl (first two, back-to-back) and solidified himself as one of the NFL’s most innovative offensive minds!

Although a later stint in Washington netted no titles, Shanahan won 170 regular season games & is responsible for developing some of the top coaching staff in talent in professional football.

Episode 219 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’re back on the gridiron discussing Warrick Dunn.

A National Champion at Florida State, Dunn enjoyed a fantastic career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons during the 1990s and 2000s.

Overall, the 1997 Offensive ROY rushed for 10,967 Yards & 49 TDs during 12 NFL seasons.

  • Episode 218: “The Hawk” - Connie Hawkins

Episode 218 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’re back with some basketball action discussing Connie Hawkins.

A powerful, above the rim & high-flying Forward, Hawkins was making highlight reel plays years before the likes of Julius Erving & Michael Jordan.

Sadly, Hawkins’ amateur career & chances for a professional one in the NBA were wiped out when he was falsely & baselessly linked to the 1961 NCAA point shaving scandal.

After a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters, Hawkins proved his dominance in the ABA with the Pittsburgh Pipers. In Pittsburgh, he led his team to the first ABA Championship & won an ABA MVP!

Finally, by 1969 his lawsuit against the NBA was settled and he joined the newly formed Phoenix Suns. Although he started his NBA career much later than anticipated, Hawkins was a 4x All-Star, became one of Phoenix’s first marquee stars & was named to the Naismith Memorial HOF in 1992!
