In this episode of the Sports Is To Life Podcast, Smiley and Courtney take a deep dive into the Women’s Basketball – most notably the WNBA, women coaches in the NBA, and a bit of women’s college basketball!

 

In the SPORTS section, they talk about the history of the WNBA, discuss the controversy regarding the wage gap – and what it really means when comparing NBA salaries to those in the WNBA. They also discuss the business of the WNBA, including ratings, merchandise sales and in-game entertainment, focusing on some of the league's future stars.

 

In the LIFE section, Smiley recounts his love of the WNBA (biggest fanboy around). Courtney talks about the Orlando Miracle, her beloved hometown team that is now the Connecticut Sun, and shares stories of her family’s recent trip to a WNBA game between the Washington Mystics and the Dallas Wings.

 

There is also LOTS of Tiger love from Smiley after his blast from the past performance at the PGA Championship!  Plus, the hosts sound off on the latest achievements by Florida State – including Jalen Ramsey's trash talk about every NFL QB, alum Brooks Koepka winning his second major of the year and Athletic Director Stan Wilcox, who is leaving FSU to take the number two job at the NCAA.

Courtney and Smiley dissect the most recent Ohio State scandal regarding Urban Meyer and his former assistant coach Zach Smith who was an alleged domestic abuser. They debate who is at fault. Is it the coach? Is it the university? 

 

Ultimately discussed in the LIFE segment, the hosts determine that Meyer is culpable by his lack of action, coupled with his lackluster answers to questions during media day. As the coach of a high profile program, it is your responsibility to set the example for young men committing to your school. 

 

Other topics include Smiley's hometown ties to MLB and NFL Hall of Fame inductees, Netflix show Last Chance U tracks down another FSU QB casualty, and a shoutout to FAMU for naming their first ever female drum major!

 

Courtney rants about her new "favorite" player's new school! LeBron can do no right!

On this week's episode, the hosts continue their conversation on international sports! But, they start off talking Scrabble at a minor league baseball game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Washington DC. 

 

In the 'Sports' segment, the hosts recap the 2018 World Cup and France's (or Africa's) victory, despite their goalkeepers epic brain freeze before diving into a discussion about the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The heat, the bribery, and whether the new dates mean that the Americans have a shot. 

 

NEWSFLASH: The Tour de France doesn't have a women's race. Why, in 2018, cycling doesn't have a version of its most famous race for women cyclists, who knows? The hosts discuss and spend the majority of the conversation just confused. 

 

Of course, since Tiger was leading during the back nine of the Open Championship, Smiley spends too much time talking about his favorite and Courtney tries not to roll her eyes too much. 

 

Oh and they talk about Terrell Owens, the NFL Hall Fame, LeBron's Lakers murals being vandalized, all in the middle of a power outage too!

This week's episode of the Sports is to Life Podcast is the first in a two-part series on international sports! First, the hosts take a deep dive into the World Cup and its all European Final Four. They also have a fun conversation about Wimbledon and Serena Williams making it to the semi finals, just 10 months after giving birth.

 

Courtney rants about LeBron heading to her favorite team and Smiley talks about the time he stayed up for 40 hours straight in order to watch the Open Championship - yes that’s golf and of course his Man Crush Everyday is involved. 

 

The duo also spends time discussing the WNBA, summer time, AC outages and weight loss challenges.

 

In episode 12, the hosts will tackle the Open Championship and the Tour de France!

In this episode, Courtney and Smiley discuss when it's time to move on. Athletes often have to decide when to move on to a new team, when to retire, and when they have to accept that the game has passed them by. With the Decision Part III upon us, the sports world is obsessed with where LeBron is going next. The hosts discuss his options, including one that is the definition of the road less traveled. 

 

In the LIFE segment, Smiley talks about knowing when his time as a substitute teacher was over. SPOILER ALERT - this is a story you WON'T WANT TO MISS. Meanwhile, Courtney discusses the end of relationships and when it's time to call it a day - and it isn't about her amazing husband! Smiley also gets to say the dreaded words: "I told you so!"

In today's episode, Courtney and Smiley recap Championship week!  Shoutouts and discussions on the NCAA Softball Champions, the Florida State Seminoles - proud alums! The Washington Capitals brought the first championship back to DC since the early 90's. Yep, we aren't counting the MLS Championship won by DC United either. The Warriors completed the sweep of the Cavs for their 3rd 'ship in 4 years and Rafael Nadal, who won his 11th French Open. 

 

Courtney goes on an unexpected rant about Lebron James, and Smiley tries not to laugh at her too much. 

 

The hosts then discuss the World Cup in Russia, amongst multiple scandals, reminisce because the Americans are being left on the sideline, and how the bidding process for huge sporting events happen. 

 

A big Congratulations to United 2026 (USA | Canada | Mexico) Bid Committee for securing the 2026 World Cup. Not only is it great to have the World Cup back in the States, but the US Men's National Team will receive an automatic bid!
