Before joining Kaplan, Brandon served as the Global Head of Public Sector at Gallup, where he led groundbreaking studies and consulted with hundreds of higher education leaders.

In addition to his work at Kaplan, Brandon has a diverse background in education technology. He was the founder and CEO of Outside The Classroom, one of the country's first successful ed tech companies, which was acquired by EverFi in 2011. Its flagship online courses on alcohol abuse and sexual assault prevention have been taken by more than 10 million college students.

Brandon is also an internationally known speaker and author on education and workforce development, having published over 100 articles and keynoted more than 200 conferences. He was named a LinkedIn "Top Voice" in education and is a frequent contributor to Forbes.com.

Brandon holds a bachelor's degree in public policy from Duke University, where he was also a two-sport Division 1 athlete. He received an honorary doctorate from Augustana College and is a trustee emeritus of Duke. He has served on the Board of Visitors of the Sanford School of Public Policy and currently serves on the board of directors for the Business-Higher Education Forum and the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U).

Controversial episode…I don’t put the cart back after food shopping!

For some reason, this is the new hot topic people use on the Internet to highlight how they are great people. Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice thing to do.

I don’t put the cart back for two reasons:

1. When I was a kid, many of my friends worked at Publix. Going outside to get the carts was a great break for them. I worked at Publix for a short time in college and also saw this firsthand. At the Publix I shop at regularly, I see my favorite bagger collecting carts, and he loves it. Why take that away from him?

2. I have young kids, and I will not leave them alone in the car or make them walk back to the store. Anyone with kids knows how challenging it can be to get kids back in the car!

Now, I do other good things that I don’t see these cart-returning heroes do. I hold doors for people and wave when a car stops and lets me cross the street in a parking lot. Does this make anyone of us a better or worse person?

More important than putting a cart back is how you act overall and who you help. I see many people doing great things in our community; some post it on social media and others don’t.
It’s not the thing we do or don’t do once that defines our character but how we act overall that matters. Don’t let the cart heroes fool you! lol

Do you take the back after you put your groceries in the car? This is a safe space! Lol
