Brilliant!!
Would you consider the audio edition of The State We're In to be better than the print version?
Can not comment
What was one of the most memorable moments of The State We're In?
The shock ending.. An emotional roller coaster!
If you could take any character from The State We're In out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Dean because he sounds an interesting character
Any additional comments?
Must read!
Grim
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really,to be fair this is not my usual genre. I went off on a whim and chose this as it was an audible recommended read. I do not recommend it particularly. I didn't really care for most of the characters, it was very cliched towards the end, and made a lot of the classic mistakes you are always told not to do when story-writing. Also, the style of narration was a bit annoying. Short sentences and that annoying inflection at the end of each sentence, like it was a question! Particularly with Joanna's character.
What will your next listen be?
The book Thief or Jeanette Wintersons "Why be happy when you can be normal"
Would you be willing to try another one of Antonia Beamishs performances?
Possibly.
Was The State We're In worth the listening time?
Not IMHO
Any additional comments?
Chick lit.
loved it
I loved the characters. It was hopeful and had a feel good factor. Also had some unexpected twists & turns.
Quick and Easy holiday read
I chose this book as a quick and easy, brain dead holiday read and it served its purpose.
It tells the story of Joanna and Dean, two very different people from very different families meeting on a transatlantic flight. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago these two strangers change the direction of each others lives.
Joanna, a thirty something hopeless romantic, thinks life is passing her by. She is set to sabotage the wedding of her ex-fiancé that she believes she wrongly jilted a few years earlier and wants to get together again. Despite Dean's best efforts to remain a stranger, Joanna confides in Dean but his initial disinterest is fuelled by his own issues stemming from his tragic early life and propensity to treat women as disposable.
The story is told from the perspective of both Joanna and Dean, as well as skipping back decades to look at their parents' stories and the way their very different upbringings have shaped their personalities. The story is slow to take off and even when it does, it doesn't reach any dizzy heights.
