  • #496: A new miracle diet?: Medical MInute

The newest diet isn't a diet at all. It doesn't name "good" or "bad" foods, involve measuring foods or require stepping on a scale. Yet it's consistently linked to healthier weights, improved mental health and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, according to one Public Health Nutrition review. It's called "Intuitive eating" and it relates more to listening to what your body is telling you – imagine that and using common sense. If we listen carefully, our bodies will tell you when you need to eat and what you need to eat. Also, if you track how you feel when you eat certain foods, you can train your body to crave the type of foods it actually needs to maintain a healthy and energetic status. So stop listening to marketing and start listening to your body.

  • #494: The truth to that 6-pack we all want so bad: Medical Minute

AHHHH the enviable six-pack—that lean, muscular, and well-defined midsection we

ALL only wish we had—may not REALLY be an indication of your overall health and

wellness. Several fitness experts suggest that thousands of sit-ups, planks, or bicycle curls

might give you abs of steel, but it comes down to a severe change in your diet as well as

your exercise routine. Low calorie, and high protein diet is necessary for rock hard abs, but

there's a hitch. Regardless of what the infomercials tell you, fat reduction is not targeted.

Often the first place you store it is the last place you lose it. Stop worrying about target

areas and just focus on a long-term, whole body approach.

  • #493: Sleep tips that can keep you healthy: Medical Minute

Sleep is essential for good health, as we all know…but a new study

hints that there may be even more benefits. If you lower the temperature in your

bedroom a couple hours before bedtime, you could increase your weight loss! A new

study shows that a cooler bedroom could subtly transform a person's stores of fat.

Keeping the bedroom cool, but not to the point of shivering, may be the answer. The

study suggests 66 degrees. If you can handle the cooler temperatures, you may be able to

boost your metabolism, turn your fat into energy, and trim your waistline. Other sleep

studies also suggest that a cooler room puts you into a deeper sleep. So, tonight, turn

that thermostat down. Don't be surprised if you need to titrate it a degree every two

nights until you reach that ideal cool room.

  • #491: Is the internet REALLY right when it comes to diagnosis?:Medical Minute

Are you an internet symptom checker? If so, your chances of getting it

right are much lower than seeing an actual physician. A new Harvard study

shows that using on-line symptom checkers are less accurate and effective

than an eye to eye, hands on exam with a physician. In the study,

physicians outperformed on-line symptom checkers with 72 % accuracy vs

34% accuracy. So, next time you're tempted to Google your diagnosis,

make an appointment instead. Don't forget, some symptoms are signs of a

serious problem and time may be of the essence.

  • #490: Health and wellness word of the day: Medical Minute

Health and wellness word of the day, Rhinorrhea is a condition where

the nasal cavity is filled with a significant amount of mucus fluid. This

condition is commonly known as a runny nose! Rhinorrhea is a

common symptom of allergies or certain diseases, such as the common

cold. The term was coined in 1866 and is a combination of

the Greek terms rhino- ("of the nose") and -rhoia ("discharge" or "flow").

Now you can look super smart when your friend asks you for a tissue! Now,

to keep that rhinorrhea at bay, eat a teaspoon of local honey each day. The

small dose of pollen works the same way that allergy shots work. The best

    form of prevention is immunity.

  • #487: Serious facts about suicide and birth control: Medical Minute

Listen up women! A newly published study from the University of

Copenhagen has confirmed a link between hormonal contraceptives and

depression. The largest of its kind, with one million Danish women between

the ages of 15 and 34 tracked for a total of 13 years and they found that

taking the combined oral contraceptive were 23% more likely to be

diagnosed with depression and those using progestin-only pills (also known

as "the mini-pill") were 34% more likely. If you are at an increased risk for

depression or suicidal thoughts/actions you need to be aware of this new

study, and take extra precautions like talking to your doctor about

contraception options and monitoring any side effects carefully.
