This is the last week of our Onward series which is a brief journey through 3 of The Psalms of Ascent. For thousands of years, these psalms have been sung, recited, wept through, and exclaimed by Jewish pilgrims as they ascended the hills traveling to Jerusalem. Even though we too are pilgrims awaiting Christ’s return, we culturally struggle to accept the slowness of direction, long obedience, and patient persistence our faith journey demands. In our first week, we resolved that our enjoyment of God and the completeness only he can bring deepens on a long journey with ourselves and with others. Last week we saw that it is good and pleasant to God when we take the long journey of unifying our bodies to appear as HIS BODY! God’s people have NEVER lived in a vacuum! Their journey has always intersected with those who do not share the same zeal for the things of or about the God we serve.

Listen to this message of our Onward series. In our Onward series we delve into three profound Psalms that have resonated with pilgrims for centuries.

We have so much hope and freedom in Christ’s completed work, but we too are pilgrims who live east of Eden, this side of heaven awaiting Christ’s return. We experience the same perpetual rollercoaster of life as the Jewish pilgrims did, but sadly our tolerance for slowness of direction, long obedience, and patient persistence isn’t very high. We empathize with their emotions but need also to accept the challenge of their posture before the same God that we serve. 

We exist to help others learn and live the ways of Jesus!

Our enjoyment of God is the result of a long journey with ourselves and with others.

We are in the middle of our series on the Armor of God. So often when we talk about the armor of God we get a ra-ra speech boiling down to “fight” “try harder” “do better” “be better”. That’s not the intention of this armor. We see that we take a passive stance to be strengthened by an incredibly active and endless power source to put on the “full armor,” which is just Paul’s fancy way of saying, PUT ON CHRIST! We put on Christ, Almighty God in human flesh, not a dead guy in a tomb, but a savior that is risen…RISEN INDEED. Why? The same powerful force that attempted to keep Jesus in the tomb is the same powerful source that actively struggles with us. Satan and his schemes that stretch beyond the physical realm, wants us to slide backwards. But our expectation is not to advance, not to attack, but to Stand Firm.
